A GUITAR, A DBX 166XL, AND A AMP?

I want to use a DBX 166XL for compression and gate for a guitar. Am I o.k. with just plugging the guitar straight into the DBX and then into the amp? Or do I need to go guitar, to direct box, to DBX, to reamp box, to amp? I just don't know if it matters. Please, any advice will be helpful.

wrong impedence for the 166... guitar wont drive it by it's self... an fx loop on the amp would be bst if it's available... a di should kinda work...

That's what I figured. The amp he is using doesn't have an fx loop. I guess I need to find a guitar pre to use. Is there any other way I can hook one up, or am I SOL?

You could mic the amp and use the 166 on an insert......

Compressing after the speaker is way diferent than compressing after the pre amp stage. Compressing before the pre amp stage is way diferent than compressing before the power amp stage.

Totally diferent results.

If you want the compressor before the pre amp stage, get a di box.

Pre amps are not di boxes.

You could also just put a stomp box of some sort in front of the dbx.....even in bypass mode it would at least get the impedance right, though the level will be really low compared to what the dbx wants to see. You might be better off just using a pedal with a comp in it.....

I have a compressor pedal, but I need a gate more than anything his guitar is very noisey, and I have a 166xl laying around. I thought that a stomp box is low-z in and out? Wouldn't that be the same thing as plugging the guitar straight into the dbx? I know I can't plug the guitar into the dbx but, I just wasn't sure if I can use the dbx by it's self into the amp.

This Works for me -

Pre amp -cable connecting output to dbx input
then a cable connecting dbx output to Cab input

Works perfectly
