Oram 8T vs Toft ATB

Anyone have tried both?

Are they at all comparable?

My biggest issue with the ATB is all that unbalanced wiring going on.

My biggest issue with 8T is the general reputation John have in the bussines.

Whats your pro's and cons on these two "Tridents".

I don't know anything about the 8T, but unbalanced wiring shouldn't be an issue for you. The only things unbalanced are the direct outs, inserts, and monitor outs. Now unless your monitors are going to be 50ft away from your desk, and your patchbay and outboard are in a different room (which makes no sense) the cable lenghts are going to be short and noise a moot point. Your longest runs are your mic cables, and that's balanced in. Perhaps your using a real plate reverb in another room (for eg), but again the aux sends and fx returns are balanced.

I agree. I have got a lot of wiring in my room with several systems going on(DAW into a digital console subbed into a 32 channel Toft ATB, 16 track tape recorder home runned into the Toft via 25' Redco cables), DTRS digital recorders, numerous keyboards with home channels, 2 track Otari recorder, etc. Board is dead silient except for some minor hiss (not hum) at high levels. Nothing unusal there.

I did spend a lot of money of power conditioners though because I was concerned about hum in the unbalanced connections. All equipment in my room except the CPU's are on a 20 amp isolation balanced power transformer. I don't know what the outcome would be with everything plugged direct into the wall outlets.

A good deal of the outboard gear you use unbalances the signal on the way in, then balances it on the way out, or not at all. Balancing is not a major issue in any small to mid size studio.

KATS is correct, not everything in the ATB is unabalanced...

Oram 8T

I have had the Series 8T for about a month now and I can say I am happy I went with this board! The Mic Pres are good, Eqs Great and running my mixes thru it makes me . I understand John's reputation precedes him (we went around and around) but if you get around that you will be extremely happy with this board. I have never heard the ATB.
