XES: My dinky lil tracking area.

Hey All!

Attached is a picture of the corner of my room used for tracking Acoustic guitar and vocals. (the back end of the mic has an sE reflexion filter blocking the rest of the rooms reflections.)

The walls have 2 1/2 inches deep foam on them.
The curtains are triple layered ..very thick (like me on this subject..)

Today... Had a bass heavy source playing from my craptastic speakers... when I put my head in that corner the bass was increased and VERY prominent.
Will this effect the recordings of my primary instruments (Aco gtr, Vox). I'm prob gonna high-pass filter anyways?
(Too heavy a bass sound.. taking over the freq-response in the signal from the mike?)

If so... Could someone pls suggest a bass-trapping option that would suit my space.

I'm certainly not a handyman so DIY would be out of the question. I'm also in Hong Kong so I'm not too sure on the availability of suitable DIY stores.

??Or should I simply just record further away from the corner??

(sorry for the millionenth post on this.. I have read it all and am reading all my books... just hoping for a guru here to help)

It's gotta be rigid fiberglass - the most common sizes being 2'X2' or 2'X4'. See RealTraps - Home for explanations why 2 1/2" of foam doesn't work for those low frequencies, especially in a corner like the one pictured. If you trap the corner on 45 degree angles, it will help a lot with the extra bass. Also see Ready Acoustics Home for traps a bit cheaper.

i tried my first vocal recording that way in a similarly sized closet

if someone had suggested bass traps (ie broadband absorbers) i would have been so much better off.

search for glenn at gik acoustics and pm him

careful on the fiberglass because of the confined space, fibers may work themselves out, especially as people in the booths tend to rub walls when in confined spaces

i don't know why but everyone likes to touch the damn fiberglass panels! its like a mosquito and a neon sign.

Fibers working themselves out.. people touching them... HA. I've got 2 very curious and nosey cats. They've already taken little nibbles off the ends of the foam. I wonder... how much bass could I absorb with 2 naughty cats?

Have Pm'ed glenn just now. Thanks. Might give the realtraps guy a go now.

Yes, that means you need bass traps there. You could try recording away from the corner, but you need bass traps anyway for best results.

You already got some good suggestions. Of course you know what brand I recommend.
