Pro Audio Stores in Chicago?

Hello,

Could anyone recommend me some nice Pro Audio Stores in Chicago?
I'm gonna be in Chicago a few days next week and I would like to check out some high end mics.

Thanks,
LC

the GC in chicago (on halsted, zip code 60657) has a decent pro audio room, better than most other GC's i've seen.

if there's a better showroom in chicago, i'd like to know about it.

Unfortunately, there really is not a good pro-audio only store in Chicago surprisingly enough. Guitar Center on Halsted, and maybe Gand Music and Sound up in Northfield, that's about it.

Maybe I'll open one, I think there's a market in Chicago for a good pro-audio shop. Anyone fellow Chicago-slutz up for starting up a high-end audio shop with me??

Hello, I am the Mercenary Audio rep in Chicago, the very question that you ask has been on my mind for some time now.I have a very well equipped studio that I work out of that is in a residential area. I have brought clients in but it is not a pro audio club house and when the owner has any free time there is music being made. It is just not as flexible as need be I am afraid.

Now the way I work at the moment is I get a relationship going with a client and whatever they need is shipped for trial,if you like it great,if you don't thats fine also . I am a fairly knowledgeable engineer, both digital and analog but I must confess I am not much at the post and pimp gear game.I am not against it nor does it bother me I just feel as if I am intruding so I save my remarks.

The pro audio stores I have been in,the above mentioned around Chicago and elsewhere are barely good for looking at gear, let alone hearing anything.I seriously can not for the life of me understand how someone can spend the kind of money that this stuff costs on the word of another person without hearing it first, but thats just me.

If Chicago had a place where one could make an appointment to go to a room where you could go into a vocal booth and test a signal chain properly, mic up a guitar cabinet,a/b test converters etc... Would it actually help as far as what would work in the real world of recording in so many different places, on so many different sources?

What is it that this pro audio club house should provide in the eyes of the Chicago gearslutz? What makes it a good place to purchase gear?I am curious.

Peace

BT

BT is the man! Phenomenal knowledge about what he sells, and very passionate about engineering, You wont regret for a minute buying one piece of gear from him. Dont go to GC for demoing purposes, its not the place for it.

I miss Pyramid Audio. Rob Vukelick was a pretty stand up guy as far as I was concerned. He had a great set up in South Holland before they moved. What ever happened to Larry Schera (sp?). He use to work for Rob, then started S.G. Audio, then went back to work for Rob. When Rob closed, I wonder where Larry went.

Only problem I had with Rob were the AKAI ADAM's I bought from him. They became the "white elephant" of the modular digital multitracks. Frickin' door-stop and boat anchors now. Not really his fault though...electronic evolution I guess.

What happened to Larry?Good question he knows his shit. Those very Akai machines are down the block from me,I think all digital decks from that era are door stops we can't blame Rob for that.I heard some very good stuff on those Akai decks many moons ago.By the way Jeff the 703 has dried up,sorry.

Peace

Hey Billy,

Yeh, those machines are mine! I picked them up a few weeks ago from ZM. I had 2 at his place and 2 at my place. The list on them new was around $25k per 12 track. I bought 2 demos from Rob and then 2 more when they came up used. Probably 10-12 years ago. Still got 1 that runs!

Where's Larry? Good question huh?

Sucks about the 703. Will probably call ATS.

Hey, you gotta V71 DI?

There's an engineer at ARS Studios (Alsip) whose name is Larry Schara. I wonder if that's the same guy...

Have been asking myself this very question since I moved here from Boston. Even the GC here does not have the same Caliber of stuff that the Boston Comm Ave GC had...

While we are on the subject of Chicago Pro Audio, can anyone recommend somewhere local to get my ATI Pro6 Channel Serviced? I am looking for some one who typically services ATI/API gear...
