Multitracking with an A&H

I bought an Allen & Heath GL2400-24 mixer recently to be used primarily for live. The mixer has direct outs on every channel and I was wondering what would be the best way to multitrack it to do a live recording..I just need ideas so I can learn about it , thanks ahead of time.

You'll need to figure out how the Direct Outs are configured. In my Mixwizard they were post fader, so I had to jumper all the channels to make the direct outs pre EQ, pre fader. I left them post MUTE. In my board they are still post insert.

I use a presonus ACP88 for compression when I do live sound, so I needed to get a bunch of "Y" cables so I can spit the insert SEND at the compressor. Don't want to record my live compression.

In any case, this works great for live recording - I get levels set and push the big red button - then I don't have to worry about it for the rest of the show, as long as I have enough disk space!

If you can set the direct outs on the GL to be pre insert, DO IT. You'll be in good shape then.

If the direct outs are post fade and you are only using the mixer to multitrack record then you are good to go.

However if you want to do a mix at the same time or (god forbid ) do monitors at the same time or even FOH then your sends to tape will need to be prefade. As Zemlin mentioned you may be able to jumper them to prefade. If that's not possible but your desk has inserts on each channel then these will probably be pre-fade and with some creative wiring or just putting a trs jack in one click you should be able to get a pre-fade send.

Good luck and please let us know how you get on.

You can use the inserts as a send just make sure that on side is TRS and the other is TS...
