Audix mic pres, any insight?

I see these floating around used every once in awhile, with all of the usual comparisons. I've never had the chance to put my "ears" on em' , and was looking for some real world opinions from the fellow 'Slutz'.
talk amongst yourselves.................

Which Audix pres have you been eyeing up? I have a load waiting to be racked at the moment. Some of them are virtually identical to Neve 1073 in their topology, as you probably know Audix was set up by ex-Neve employees and they used the Neve topology in certain designs.

Some of the pres/eqs have T-1442 Marinair transformers, identical to the 10468 / 31267 used by Neve. Some also have the ELMA attenuators and passive low/mid/high inductors as Neve used.

The later Audix is not as funky IMHO, the stuff I have uses fets and non-descript transformers.

If you see the Elma / passive eq / Marinair units they should sound v.similar to a Neve 1073 for half (or less) the price.

Please let us know which ones you purchase if you buy some, we might be able to exchange notes.

Cheers,
Justin

edit: Just to add, there are a HUGE variety of Audix modules available, every time a friend acquires some they are different to ones I've seen before. Make sure to look for the ELMAs / Inductors / Marinairs, the fet and ic-based gear is not as exciting IMHO.

Thanks for the reply Justin! The modules I'm eyeing are 35102's. Oh shit, here's the link to the auction. Remember guys, I've got dibs
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...EBWA%3AIT&rd=1
Seriously, I could use the advice if these are in fact worth having. Don't know what they're worth but I'm watching them closely.
Thanks again,
Tommy

Hey Tommy, I've got schematics for the 35102, if you want them pm me your email, but I warn you it's a 9Meg file!

If you want to see some well racked 35102 check this thread at Tech Talk:

http://www.recording.org/ubb/ultimat...=003736#000000

Squib who racked them gave me the schems. You've got to be a member to access T.T, but it should be worth it as a couple of guys there know these modules in case you need feedback.

Cheers,
Justin

Hey Justin, thanks a bundle for the links! I'll definitely follow that thread through. And I appreciate the offer on the schematics as well. I'd love to have them, but unfortunately my ISP limits e-mail attachments to 2mb! If you feel like breaking them down, I'd be all over that. Let me know, and a big to you!
Thanks,
Tommy

Hi Tommy,

I've looked at the file, but it's 9meg in zipped form. Am not sure how you would decrease it's size, I imagine the guy who sent it to me would've compressed it if it was possible... But then I'm not an IT pro :-)

If you can find a friend with the email size I could send it to them and they could post you a cd?

Let me know if this helps,

Justin

Avedis @ rent Averills place is very familiar with these pres
and comparisons to Neve.

He will give you the details.

I think when I called him his answers were.

1. "Yes. We have a few left."
2. "If you want the Neve sound don't buy these
you will be disappointed"
3. "I don't care for them"

The descriptives I remember are:
Dark, Muddy, Noisy, Slow, Too many capacitors in the circuit, not at all like the Neve circuit, Eq points are same as Neve.

I have never heard them and am only passing on what I was told.
Call him if you want the fresh scoop. He is extremely honest and helpful.

I have a pair of 35102's, though to be honest, haven't got round to trying them as pres. The Averill comments may well be true in that regard.

But the EQ ... well, something else. I use mine on crunchy guitars all the time .. or should I say, I use them to make my guitars crunchy. Would use them on snare etc. for the same reason. I'd take some convincing to get rid of mine, no plugin comes close. Though I'm sure the various Heios/Calrec/Neve etc. equivalents do the same (or better) thing. On the other hand, I have a Focusrite 115, and it's chalk and cheese compared to the Audix.

There have been a few floating round ebay UK, as there's someone breaking up a desk. Going for 650 - 800 USD a pair it seems. My only regret is that I don't have another pair.

Tommy and Justin,

Check out this free website I found for sending large files.

http://www.sendthisfile.com

You register (free) and they'll host your uploaded file until the specified person can download it. I used it this week to post some .pdf files to the CD duplicator I'm using. Worked beautifully.

Just got back in town, (and on the computer) Thanks all for the rep-lies, I appreciate the Audix info and passed on the ones I was watching( for the time being) Thanks again Justin for the assistance, I'd definitely like to get those schematics, and thanks Screws for the info on the download site. I'll be checking that out.
Jees, with all of the thanks I doled out this was getting an "Oscar" vibe.
