SPL Deesser Question

Just got one used. Never used a deesser before. I like what it does for the most part but it seems the greater the level of deessing the darker and less open the overall tone of the mic became.

There are 1-10 degrees of deessing. Male and female options. Overall the femal option stayed more open but didn't do much to deess in the most offensive frequencies which surprised me cause I have a higher voice.

3 wasn't noticable. 5 was noticeable. 10 was detrimental. Again, I'm talking about tone change, not the deesing. Is this typical?

Thanks,

JPM

Honestly, if you have to use the SPL at such an extreme setting, the problem comes from the choice of mic or pre for that particular voice IMO...
