can someone give me a quick rundown on protools and drums/editing/ creating loops

I am still struggling. I got protools about a month ago. I am missing the process here big time. Here is what I want to know how to do.

I want to record a drummer, using 10 tracks. I want to be able to take the drum take which is about 95% tight with the click, to 99 or 100% tight and solid.

I also use a click track inside protools, I do multiple takes to get as close as possible but I want to be able to clean this stuff up and make it like the pros do. I imagine it involves using some beat detective, tab to transients, something along those lines.

The session guy I am working with is fantastic, but I want to make the drums tighter with the grid, solid as possible.

Second issue that I am trying to figure out is how do you take a recording like a percussion piece, tambourine, shaker, drum beat, sound effect etc. and make it into a perfectly timed piece that you can loop and sync with other pieces.

I love producers like timbaland, will iam, jayz, etc. that take killer little beats and sounds and loop them. I know they use stuff like the akai mpc units as well as protools, but I only have protools and want to figure this stuff out.

I have Protools LE, just got an 003 so keep that in mind.

some free vids by Kenny Gioia taking you through the whole "rigid" beat detective thing.

To sound like timbaland and the others try augementing your live drums with some samples.

Yep. Check all those videos that Kenny did. They'll get you in the ballpark.

ok got the basics of the beat detective down. I wish there was more I could learn but the video is just a quickie 3 minute thing. Anymore info out there.

also how can I do similiar stuff using the tab to transients method?

lastly how is the best way to make loops using protools, either bringing in one hits or recording a drummer and then looping a section????

Not Pro Tools specific, but applicable to any DAW really as the processes are the same, Recording Magazine ran a whole issue a few months back (Nov, Dec or Jan I think) on loop creation, cutting, tips and tricks. Try and get a back issue if you can, should help alot.
