You have demonstrated a perfect example of why twitter has benefits above other online platforms.

Facebook status is limited to '[name] is...'

Twitter can be anything. THere might be 'noise' out there but you only follow who you want to listen to. No friends competition here, just a customise mini-blog feed in your pocket.

I wish everyone understood the networking benefits this thing has.

YES!

And so much more! It's not just one way questions and answers though, another whole side to twitter is that when you message someone publicly (you direct a message with @[username]) then others can join in the conversation. Some conversations become worldwide, which even more people join in on by seeing what is 'trending' on search.twitter.com - this is how the breaking news stories spread really fast, or how people mass comment on things like awards ceremonies.

One huge group of people started a 'bad film club' as per the idea of father ted/blackbooks/ IT crowd writer @glinner where everyone rented the shit film 'the happening', played it at the same time, and mass comic slating of the film ensued. It 'trended' and the whole world got involved. Try that on any other medium, digital or not, past or present

Sad but true. Now back to updating my facebook status.

I think I get the idea now. However compared to myspace or facebook I'm having a really hard time "getting into it".
It just seems to be hard work to get started and get used to the whole thing.

Also whats the story with setting up your mobile? It says Twatter will send me txts and I'll get charged???

i have a friend who sends messages from his mobile to "twitter" and "facebook".
all messages are about how cool he is like "i am at a great party!" or
"just saw this hot girl in the club i am right now". i think it's so f*cking sad ...
if it would be really such a great party he sure would not have the time to send this
stupid messages. fuuck

anyway, you need to go online with your mobile and have to pay for your online time.
twitter is free ...

If I was a bad guy, I'd just start figuring out who had really nice personal studios in my area and start planning my B&E's based on their tweets... "I jst got 2 d bch 4 a fw hrs of surfn"... That sounds like a go for me and my crew. We'll have that place stripped clean long before he's shaking the salt water out of his ears...

Uh, not that I'm a bad guy or have a crew, mind you. I'm just sayin'...

Twitter is free. There's an option to update via text, as was the sites original plan (to mass text friends) but most people use dedicated apps on their phone to use twitter. I wouldn't use it as much if the net wasn't free on iPhone.

Why do people think that all the mundane things in thier lives should be shared with the entire world, no wonder mediocrity is king these days.

Do people actually seriously think that anyone would be interested in what they had for breakfast or when they take a crap?

Social networking or anti-social networking? I thought social networking was getting off yer arse and going out to meet people or see a show or something.

Just another waste of bandwidth on the world wide waste of time.

Also should'nt these twitter threads be in the geekslutz section? Maybe we need a new section such as: "I'm so bored somebody kill me" or "1001 ways to waste time while at work" or "I'm socially inept let's connect".

Just a thought, Jules?

just want to make sure i'm getting this straight: people who have hundreds, maybe thousands, of posts on an internet forum called gearslutz are themselves posting on said internet forum about the unrealness of the social interaction to be had in twitter, and the utter lameness of the sad, pathetic, self-absorbed people who have nothing better to do than twitter away the day.

okay, glad i got that cleared up. thumbsup

I don't know, I think Twitter is pretty cool. I stay updated on what my network is thinking, doing, writing about, and listening to, much more than I would otherwise. The real world can pull people apart, and I think Twitter is actually bringing people together in a similar way that Facebook does, but Twitter is more about what is happening in real time.

Check this out. Twitter updates on what people are listening to:

This reminds me of reading a book Eno wrote. It was a diary of one year of his busy life.. After a few chapters I tossed it cause I thought, you know what? I have stuff to do too.!

I have a chum that is CRAZY for all this stuff.. but he is interested in it from the angle of promoting his band.. So... I am always checking things out on his recommendation, then realizing that its a load of ballz..(for me that is) .

No no.

Social network twitter is not as important as Gear Twitter.

Well, I've found one good use for it. It's now incorporated into my new sexual pickup line for women in the internet age:

"If youtube myspace, I'll twitter your yahoo."

I'm posting this in the other contemporaneous Twitter thread, so don't be surprised to see it there, too.

I remain something of a skeptic about the value of Twitter but here's an article (forwarded to me by the nice folks at Tunecore) from About.com on using Twitter to promote music:
