Kitchen & Bathroom Remodeling Contractors Supplier's Directory from MacRAE'S BLUE BOOK
estamates are free most of the time

I used to do finish work for homes ,
sometimes we would do studio builds , at the time I did not no much
about the needs of a studio . the person contracting us would walk us through as to exactly what he wanted. custom is the way to go
if you spend some time with the contractor. be cool with the workers
a five dollar lunch can go a long way. or a beer at the end of the day.
good luck

Raxess and Middle Atlantic do some decent chipboard based furniture (like Ikea).
Around $300+

Argosy and Omnirax do much better but more expensive stuff.
Around $1500+

I'm currently building a desk & racks out of red oak boards and furniture grade oak ply at the moment. Even with top grade wood it won't cost more than $300.

The expense for me was in the tools- $800 for a table saw, $100 for a biscuit jointer, $400 for a mitre saw plus all the other stuff that I've collected over the years.
You could do it for less if you hire the tools for a week or so- but if you don't know how to use them you'll just waste a lot of money on ruining a nice piece of timber.

If you do make it yourself, make sure you use a high quality ($80+) blade on your table saw. Oak is hard to cut.
Also- you can build a crosscut jig for a table saw out of your offcuts.
It can save you money and in some cases negate the need for a miter saw.

I'd suggest building a prototype out of the cheapest wood you can find- maybe not the whole thing, but anything that is tricky. It is better to have a practice run rather than ruin a good piece of wood.

I like to use biscuit joins on the tabletop so that you don't have any screws showing.
If you use screws on top then at least use a countersink.
PM me if you have any questions.

See my post in the classifieds section! I have a rack that needs to be out of my garage, I'm by Giants Stadium. Free or trade something fun...It used to belong to my church, they didn't need it, I used it for a little while but it is not really that road worthy. For a home studio though it would be great, has 10 spaces for a mixer on top and 10 rack spaces below and is on wheels. It is a raxxess I believe. Hopefully it is okay to post this here, don't want to be selling goods in the wrong spot.

Hey how are you?
I saw your posting here and thought I would offer a possible solution. I own a company here in Miami Style & Function. We specialize in custom recording studio furniture. Everything is 100% custom made for your exact studio needs and we ship world wide. We do not use any MDF or particle board Only Cabinet grade Finished wood. Our site is: www.styleandfunctiondesign.com its currently being revamped so it does not have much products on there now. I can email you a ton of pics or if you go to ebay and type item # 280107344862 you will see some different models we have done. I have attached a console we just recently did. Let me know if you have any questions Thanks!

Studio desk

What type of Keyboard do you have and how many keys? The one posted here has a mixer slider that slides back and forth over the keyboard, it is being used for the PC monitor now. That desk I actually made for my Fiance a few months ago and once I set it up she prefered the mixer off the left side. However theres many ways to do it. If you have a smaller keyboard we could have it slide out from underneath as I do with most 61 keys and 88 key controllers. If you have a weighted key 88 we could probably still do it. let me know!

Too bad you don't live here in Minnesota. My company decided to clear out our warehouse today. We filled a dumpster with around $400,000 worth of Herman-Miller furniture, cabinets, counters, hanging desks, chairs, and the vast majority of it is brand new. Unfortunately it will probably be picked up tomorrow or friday so you'd have to drive pretty fast to take a look at it.

Well we could build the console to fit what ever type of mixer you plan on getting sunk into the center then have the 2 keboards sitting underneath on the slider. Is that M audio a 49 or 61? The Pic attached is the MC002 which is made for an MCU plus 1 extender with the synth slide underneath....

dont really like the idea of sliding my keyboard out i like the putting into the desk more but im thinking of just getting the one with the one on the site with the mackie mcu in it and ask you to put some racks in it or just build some like the pic you have of it with the seperate racks to the side of the table and then just get a regualr 2 tier keyboard stand.

That would work. The one you just saw with the slider is the same as the one on the site. This one just has the RU's in it. Here is a pic of some side cars ....

I'm an Argosy fan.
Great quality and design.
The monitors are at ear level when sitting in my chair.

And to chime in and toot my own horn, there's always the AudioLot CRC, although I have my keyboard on a stand behind the desk and it works perfectly for me. You can check it out on our website by going to pro audio sales and then clicking AudioLot Records under manufacturers. There's pics, a video, and lots of info. The manufacturing is done by hand at Sterling Modular. Nothing but the best.

Right, when I say console I mean desk. Those are the prices for the desk. Which if you shop around with the other company's you were told about like Argosy and Sound construction You will see that we are well below their costs Plus REAL wood all custom made!
