Thread Starter | What Era/Genre do you primarily draw your engineering inspiration from?
Whenever I post genre/era specific threads that relate to particular artists or 'sounds' that I am into, I've noticed that my tastes tend to be in the minority here on Gearslutz. This got me to wondering about what genres and musical eras my fellow slutz are really inspired by.
There are so many sub-genres of music these days but I did my best to try and encompass the spectrum in a way that would be telling as to what recording eras the majority of folks here are personally inspired by.
So what is that 'dream' sound that you are after? What era/eras keep you inspired through the trials and tribulations we all experience?
With all of the debates/conversations about gear choices here on GS I think it would be really interesting to know what eras of recording the majority of you slutz are referencing as you pursue your quests to capture 'that ultimate sound'.
*multiple choices are allowed but I'd like this poll to be a representation of primary influences.

I grew up in the 80's but lean more towards modern metal and the like.
Should there not be more present era's on the list maybe??
There's no doubt musically I was inspired by the 80's but I am more inspired engineering/production wise around today's heavy music.

I know the catagories are broad but it's impossible to encompass every genre/era with a 10 choice poll! As you said you were musically inspired by the 80's and now by more modern 'heavy music', I'd think the 'Post 80's- Rock/Metal' catagory would be a decent fit.
Guys, this poll is meant to be a broad overview (it just isn't possible to cover every genre in 10 year increments with one poll) and I hope you all will participate. I really am curious |

i find the selection to be pretty narrow actually. i was expecting to select a decade, not a style. more about the technology available than what kind of music, which would be impossible to fit on a list.
for example, i'm inspired by jamaican productions from the 60's.
so that's pre-80's, but so is Dark Side of the Moon.....so is Return to Forever....

Listenin' to RTF as I type this...nice influences!
I figured 'reggae/dub' into the world catagory...I know the world catagory has to encompass alot here (I tried to split up the genres I figured most guys here leaned towards from my time spent reading the posts) but I'd say a vote for Pre 80's 'Blues/Rock/Metal' covers Floyd and RTF.
Again, just trying to get an overview. My personal tastes lean towards 60's/70's era Soul, Funk and R&B as well as early Dub but I'm also a huge fan of early Jazz recordings as well...I could make several polls just disecting those genres!

i hear you, you have taken on a mammoth task and you know it
but to me, the 50's were so different from the 60's, the 70's even more so. that's why i balked at the "pre-'80s" thing as if anything before the eighties could possibly be put in the same box, whereas i would say production styles since the 80's are pretty much all-inclusive, anything goes...

I may have to figure out a way to get more specific and split it over several polls.
Thanks for the feedback.

Well, not too many participants so far.
*nobody influenced by country music production? Interesting when considering it is such a commercially successful genre these days.

World/Electronica?
That's like saying Bluegrass/Metal
I produce electronic with a very '80s verby Goth sound to it, but a modern big arse bass and some dirt.

hm, yeah... it's hard with such broad categories. but i voted the best i could!
anyway, i would say that my ears are fairly influenced by pop, rock and folk music from the 60s and 70s, in a very broad sense; more modern influences, however, are more specific. indie rock from the 90s and on. not very much popular music influences my production decisions from the 80s on.

I didn't mean to imply that a vote in the World/Electronica catagory meant you were influenced by both but rather one or the other.
I would, however, argue that World music influences have been embraced in Electronica on a far greater scale than by any of the other genres listed so they seemed the most likely to have to share a catagory. Haven't seen to many Metal bands with a banjo player
I apoligize to those that cannot cite any influences within the catagories I came up with.

It's obviously a broad and slightly imperfect poll as I'd need far greater than 10 available catagories to encompass every genre/sub genre and era!
Just wanted to get a general vibe of what my fellow slutz were into as well as to create a thread that might be a fun diversion for others as well as myself.

As was mentioned earlier, I think decades or pasrts of decades would have been easier to vote for than genres. Many people are influenced by more than one genre.
I grew up listening to 70's pop/rock. 70's and 80's funk/RnB and late 70's jazz-rock/fusion. I voted for pre-1980's Funk/RnB......which was telling only part of the story.
As far as your title is concerned, I'm most influenced by 1970's engineering; Geoff Emerick, Ken Scott, Todd Rundgren, David Rubinson etc....

Alt Country.
I know that it is not very produced, but that is the production I like.
I don't think it has changed much since it originated.
Once you start over-producing it, it seems to turn into classic rock (Drive by truckers) or classic country (Cassie Chamber's latest).
The biggest problem I have with being into this style of production is, you need killer players to make it happen. Killer players seem scarce in my world.

I'm with chrisso, more of a decade thing as I was influenced by a wide spectrum of music styles. Actually the same as chrisso.

After this poll dies I'll do one on most influential decades.
Again, I know the genres are a bit broad but voting for more than one catagory is allowed.
Thanks for participating guys |

jazz/classical? Those are very different genres. Whie both are primarily acoustic the treatment can be far different. It has be said before but you need to separate the pre/post 80s thing. INteresting but the poll is too flawed to be useful, I would think.

I have an easier time naming the recordings/bands I really enjoy since they don't easily fit into one of those categories:
The Mahavishnu Orchestra
Return To Forever
Frank Zappa
I really do love Russ Elevado's work w/ D'Angelo, The Roots, and RH Factor too, as far as modern recording goes.

This would take up at least half of the forum and probably get me banned for life!
I disagree that the poll is not useful. It's certainly no definitive census (impossible with a 10 option choice limit) but it is telling in some areas nontheless.
For instance, I think it is very interesting that no one has voted for modern country when the sound is such a big part of the recording industry. I'm also surprised that modern pop hasn't received more votes when threads about someone like Avril Lavigne get such an enormous amount of attention here on GS.
I will however say, that I am finding the individual posts about personal influences more interesting than the generalizations in the poll.
