daw controllers to work with pro tools

i was looking into daw controllers and i was thinking of getting one but not sure if i really need one and don't really know too much about them. looking at purchasing the tascam us 2400 i know its not perfect but its decent but i don't really know much about daw controllers, just finished reading the mixer engineer handbook and it sounded like i cool idea to get one for when i better learn to mix. I know this is probably a stupid question to you guys but like i said i juts read the mixers engineer handbook. Only thing im not sure about is if like you just use a daw controller to control the mix window say in pro tools or can i like add instruments and stuff or mics like a mixer. sorry for the maybe stupid question im pretty sure it is a stupid question which i think i know the ans but not sure so decided to ask. Any help is appreciated and if someone can explain to me a lil more about a daw controller i gladly thank you.

The Tascam US2400 just controls your protools/software, so no.
It's not a recording console that has preamps, eq etc like what you probably read in the book.

Other DAW controls are Command 8 & Mackie CU

However, the Control 24 has both abilities; it had preamps (focusrite) and controls your mix in pro tools.

Yes, the tascam controls faders, mutes, solos and rotary knobs to control pan/aux sends

If you are using Pro Tools, IMO go for the Command 8 along with the 002R.

I was originally looking at the C|8 , Mackie Control and Tascam US2400.
I went with the C|8; beter intergration with PT, IMO better build and cheaper.

that tascam u 2400 isn't made anymore and tascam will not support it and from what i've read across the net it was pretty dodgy with the drivers to begin with.

if u don't have the 002 yet then just get the new 003 with its faders and the interface if u need one. the mackies are nice but a little pricey so for now i just got a presonus faderport. 1 unit for doing any fader moves i feel like doing. (I'm hoping presonus will bring out a whole 9 fader unit )

Depending on what version of PT and OS your running, I would suggest a use ProControl. I run one with LE 7.2 on a Quad 2.5 PPC Mac and have been super happy.

I had a SAK 2.2, and wanted something that felt bettter.
I tried the 002 unit, no likey. Built for crap, not a tactile in response as I had hoped.
I tried a Command 8 and sold it in 2 weeks due to the same issues above. Crap build.
The SAK was better than both of the cheap digi products IMHO.

With the ProControl, when I touch a fader and move it, it is just like I am on a console. Adjusting plug-ins is a dream. It is so well thought out and tied into PT's that I can turn off the monitors and work fine.
If you get a chance to play with one I highly recommend it. You will feel directly connected to the software.

It is a discontinued product, but I am more concerned with my working environment than some companies direction. It will be supported for years.
I do know they finally pulled all the required drivers out of LE. So, it can be tricky to get working. I could not get it to work with a Intel Mac.

Lastly, if looks are important, This thing looks tits in an Argosy.

Good luck.

i hera the 002 and the 003 is preety much the same and if thats true the digi 002 would be cheaper for me. Bcains just to clarify the 002 is the interface/mixer combined with a command 8 which let me get this right a daw controller, if true really considering this. dpasch tryed looking up the procontrol only thing i found was some new mackie one coming out which looks nice can extend for alot of channels all post up the link and what about the mackie mcu, believe it is also a mixer.

How's that new "Pro" one, fellows? Any significant improvement?
I'm fairly sure that save for a couple of small upgrades (like additional midi ports), the "pro" is the same thing. Incidentally, I have the old all dark grey MCU and XTs and they are great. Great build quality and I've never had a problem. I lost a fader once but that was my own drunken fault. Replaced it in minutes with a new P&G fader and its a rock.

I love mine and would recommend them to anyone. Now if you're going to only use PT, I'm sure you can find something with slightly more functionality if you go with a digidesign overpriced unit. I myself would stay away from that C24 just because of the pres. I don't need that many focusrite pres for anything. I'd much rather pick my own amps.

Frontier Tranzport. Wireless. You can edit while you're on the john!

(Seriously, this thing is a godsend for drum producers.)

P.S. I had a BCF 2000, it worked...Very light and plastic-y, but what do you expect?

I just got one of these to try out with PT.
It's got faders, buttons and knobs, but it's not touch sensitive, so it's pretty annoying to automate with. I'm returning it. Bummer. I actually thought I would get something great for $200.

The Tascam had a joystick for surround panning, but I haven't heard much good said about it. I know the Pro Control Edit pack had one, but that's a "legacy product". Is there anything current that has one for under 20K?
