Genelec 1029a

Anyone use Genelec 1029As? Thoughts? Is $600 a good deal on a used pair?

i have mixed on 1029s for about 4 years both in the studio with a sub & in my music room at home without.

i think they are excellent value, reveal lots of detail in the sound (more than a Mackie powered monitor for example) & extend pretty far down without a sub. However in the UK Genelecs have seriously fallen out of favour with engineers because of their "glossy" sound. Musicians on the other hand seem to love them.

Can't comment on the US price...

Hey, what can I say? I calls 'em as I sees 'em. And kudos to MIX for publishing a review criticizing a big advertiser.

FWIW, I thought they might be nice flanking a computer monitor, or in a consumer 5.1, but I didn't think they were in the same league as Genelec's meat and potatos and I wouldn't use them for critical mixing.

Really funny the range of responses - I personally like the 1029s as my own sort of "NS-10s," use 'em a lot, but try not to listen to them more than a couple hours a day (ear fatigue). I hate the 1031s and 1032s. Would rather mix on a blown Aiwa brand mini system.

$600 is a good deal on them - I got mine for free, which seemed like an even better deal, but those don't come up so often. In the studio I work (where the 1031s are) we also have Meyer HD1s and NHT A20s - I think the NHTs are the most underrated pro speakers, blowing away anything in the Genelec line I've heard. But you won't find them for $600, I'm afraid... I've seen them used for about $1100 before.

I don't mind the 1029's,but the Genelecs are not my favorite speakers either. I've been an
NHT A-20 user for about three years and have never looked back. They are a great speaker to mix on with more punch than you would think from a speaker of it's size. That's just my opinion.

I think it's always good to get a lot of opinions. My opinion is they stink. Not worthy of the Genelec name (not that I think Genelecs are god, but i respect their full range systems).

NHT A20's

The NHT's are beautiful. I am currently doing a 3.5 month mix marathon for a box-set release. We are using ADAM S2A's, NS10's and the studio TAD mains on occasion. One night after a session I hooked up my new A20's and the assist and I heard the track, which opens with a vocal only, and we were shocked at the detail and transparency. So much so that we both whipped around at each other in amazement. The difference was not subtle. Any detailed trouble spots I questioned in the ongoing track were immediately revealed. "Hearing is not believing" is the term that came to me while we listened. They are definitely worth more than you pay for them... The ADAM monitors seem a little tubby in the low mids and the ribbon tweet can get a little beady sometimes but overall they are impressive. NS10's are still king in my court but the A20's are the perfect compliment as a next size up monitor.
