help with live kick mic

Fellow Slutz,
While I have a ton of fun kick drum mics (the new Yamaha Sub is a blast), I am an admitted idiot
with regards to live kick drum mics.
I've been asked to recomend a live kick drum mic at a reasonable price. It would also need to function as the bottom mic with a djembe.

Who's using what and why?

Thanks for your help!

I`d say a 421 would be the best to cover both those applications in a live setting.
I`m finding 421`s are great on a lot of things these days.

421, dificult to go wrong with. Beyer ME 88 is good too, but they blow after a while. Shure SM91 (plate style mic) is another good option.

The AKG D112 might be good choice. The D112 is buildt like a tank and will stay with you for years without failure. I've been gigging for 18 years, and never seen a blown-up D112.

And it sound good ;-).

Here's a few I've used

AKG D112
Sennheiser 421
ATM25
AE 2500 [new from Audio Technica]
EV PL20 or EV RE20

These are all good but different. The D112 and the ATM25 probably the least expensive new. The 421 is handy and versatile because it has the 5 position bass rolloff. The EV mics are studio quality for bari-sax, tuba, bass amp. The ATM25 is good on floor tom and guitar cabs and my fave for small kik drums.

The 2500 is innovative and gives excellent attack as well as solid bottom. It's great on upright bass, perhaps the best mic I've every used in that capacity.

Thanks , this is very helpful.
I use an RE-20, D112, Yamaha Sub, U47
and sometimes an M149. I think this guy is looking for something small and inexpensive.
That would describe many of the suggestions.
Thanks!

I say the Audix D6 also... I don't generally use it for kick drum, I have other favs... but the D6 is small enough to mic a djembe so that the subs go "BOOM!" Stick the D6 right in the bottom if using a stand. If the player likes to wear it with a harness and play it with the bottom between his legs, impress upon him how great it will sound with the mic on the inside.

Kick and dejembe?

Either a 421 or an SM57, maybe an AMT25. The D112 can get out of control on dejembe if it's a loud room and/or near the subs because it's a bit omnidirectional and the lows are very extended.
