"Stray Dog Freedom" - Bright Eyes - Guitar Tone

Hello,

I am new to electric guitars and all of the necessary gear that accompanies them and I have a real newbie question for all of you.

How would one get the guitar tone used in Bright Eyes' song, "Stray Dog Freedom" (on the new Four Winds EP)? I can't seem to do it.

Thanks very much.

Ok, I'm having a nice and slow saturday night, so I'll bite. What don't you hear in your sound that you do hear in the bright eyes? Its a bit strange to ask people, hey, how do I get this exact guitar tone? I would say, first, can you approximate the guitar sound in the room with your guitar/amp, then, if you can, what are you missing that separates what you did from the actual recording.

part of it is the guitar. conor oberst uses lots of different guitars; can't remember offhand what that song sounds like (and there is other music playing in my house right now, so i can't listen to it!), but yeah.

part of it is the amp. i have NO idea what amp he's using on that song; perhaps someone with more guitar experience might have an idea.

part of it is the player. conor's probably going to sound like conor, no matter what guitar he is playing. and you will sound like yourself! in order to sound like conor, you've got to study how he plays.

in short, i don't know how to get that tone. . sorry for such an unhelpful post!

I can get classic distortion tones but like I am really new to any sort of effects chain for guitars and so I have no idea how to get this thick/soft/in your face sound that he has there. It's nothing really unique but I was just wondering what sort of setup comes to mind when you hear it.

Well, in that song there are also a few distinct guitars. I'm not a big guitar/amp type guy, but if I had to guess you have on L/R a classic slightly overdriven Fender type sound, prob a tele or ES-335, and then there is a fuzz guitar in the middle and a mroe distorted one as well.

yes there is great tone on this record and it sounds very fender to me (having a fender amp and a tele)...also by the way ben kweller plays the guitar line in question if that helps...its not conor

also it is most certainly doubled (or tripled)

fenders when driven tend to smooth out (espcially on a neck pickup) and thats what this recording sounds like to me

what equipment do you have to work with?
