Clipping...

Somewhat new to my gear...

I have an Apogee Ensemble for converters, and Vintech X73i for pre-amp.

How do I know when I'm clipping the Vintech with the signal coming into it because it has no metters.

I know when the converters are being clipped because they have meters but not the Vintech.

So is there anyway to tell other than just listening to it?

tough question I guess??

If I'm clipping at the converters does that mean I'm clipping the pre-amp, and if not then I'm not clipping at the pre-amp?

Sorry for the newbie question.

Just watch your digital input levels and listen to everything else.

Don't worry about what other gear in the chain is saying it's doing - just set it the way it sounds good to you... in some cases that might mean clipping on purpose.

Turn the output od the vintech all the way up. Then watch the meters at the converter or DAW and adujst the input. When you don't see clipping at the meters, you won't be clipping at the input. Then you can fine tune with the output knob and you can probaly crank the input of the vintech up a bit more before you'll clip.

Hrmmm... now I'm a little confused.

I was told to keep the OUTPUT knob on my Vintech to FULL and then adjust the input knob accordingly?
