Is this a proper routing setup for OTB mixing using a mixer?

My tools I am working with are:

-Tascam 24 Channel/8 bus mixer.
-MOTU 24 I/0
-2 FMR RNC's
-DBX 160x

So, let's say I want to mix OTB

I run 24 channels out of DAW thru MOTU into the line ins; thus bypassing the pres) of channels 1-24 of my mixer. Would effects sends/returns work the same way?

Drums could all be bussed to 1 bus (if I wanted to). I guess I would use the effects sends from the drum bus into my DBX 160x. I know I would have to use a Y cable and make it mono..but All channels would be equally compressed...yes?????

Bus 2 could be all guitars summed to L-R.
Effects send into the RNC.

Bus 3 could be all of the vocals summed to L-R.

L-R main for the overall mix could go into my Chameleon Labs line in to use the eq also. But, in the end..my L-R main mix out of the mixer would be fed back into the DAW for a 2 track burn-ready wave. This should assure easy mixing and no lining things up issues.

Is this a sensible mix setup?

In a sense, 8 compressors could be used at the same time (1 on each buss) for a real time mix.

Forget about killing my prestine signal etc etc. I also know that a summer might do better..but is this the way I would route my mixer?

You're just aching to use all those I/O's aren't you?
Does that Tascam allow MIDI control for ITB mixing?

It's not really that

Want to use out/ins??.sure I do. But, it's more that I'm curious as to how the separate tracks will sum together opposed to how it sounds ITB. Also, I don't enjoy summing overheads and then guitars and then kick and then snare etc. for each song. I kind of have to if I want to use outboard compression on seperate busses. I'm trying to avoid this largely due to the pain in the ass of lining everything up properly after I go out of the box and then back in. It will be faster during mixing, I think..to go out all at once. Other reasons too, but I think that alone is enough reason to try it.

No, it's a board from 1995-ish. No midi control as far as I know. I don't think I'd have a use for that anyhow. I don't use midi. Maybe it's just volume etc like it would be if it were just a control surface with faders? I dunno about that stuff. Never looked into it.

Thanks.

get a patchbay. you can then enjoy latency free processing before your desk, after (output), and as insert. And you won't have to make a choice right now where to put what. As flexible as plugins

I'm considering a patchbay for sure. However; until I decide that I'm going to mix OTB, I don't want to invest in patchbays and a thousand patch cables.
I'm just considering how to initially set up my routing to see if I like the sound at all. I've always used ITB mixing. Recently, since I got some outboard compressors; I've been running L-R mixes out of the box and then back in. It's just a pain in the ass to get them to line up afterwords.

mmm. well, it's a choice. pain in the ass or hole in the wallet.

seriously. a reasonable trs won't set you back hundreds of $$. If you want to do it right the first time, go TT and hardwire it.
as for lining up. you can "ping" the latency, and use that number to correct. also most daws have some form of latency compensation.

sounds like he wants to mix OTB to me. why all the resistance?

just use inserts for your outboard when mixing on that board.
