Thread Starter | Boring post: What mic fits my setup? My situation is: Singer/songwriter, acoustic music, home studio. Thinking about getting some more mics. My budget: 1500$ My question: What do you think fits my setup, primarily with versatility in usage? One expensive mic or several mid-priced/inexpensive ones? My current equipment: Mics: 1 Rode NT1, 1 Shure Sm81, 2 Peluso CEMC 6 (matched), 1 SM57 and 1 SM58. Preamp: Presonus ADL 600, fireface 800. What I want to record and which mic I plan to use (where X marks my uncertainty about getting other mics): Acoustic guitar: peluso cemc6/X Vocals: Rode NT1/X Bass: DI through ADL El. guitar: amp and sm57 cello/violin: X piano: Cemc6/X Drums overhead: peluso cemc6 snare drum: Sm57 and 58 kick drum: X I'll try not to mic the toms and hihat at first. In general I'd like to keep it simple, so excellent if I could go with one expensive on vocal, acoustic guitar, cello and kick drum. I have an offer on a U87Ai for 1700USD. A bit above my budget, but definitively an upgrade from my NT1. Peluso 2247LE as well I've heard. Maybe EV RE20 on Cello and kick drum? |

Get one good mic. If you're really fixated on the 87, get an older one. Many, many great records were made with all or mostly 87's. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's first "Will the Circle..." album for one, and it's one of the best sounding acoustic guitar/vocal/etc records I know of. There are a bunch of really good mics for $1500. Check the archives here as it's a pretty common topic. Best if you can try some out first. Try booking a day at a studio with a good mic locker and you'll be very, very glad you did. |

If the vocals are going to be mainly or exclusively yours, does your voice sound like that of anyone else (preferably famous) you can name? The 2247 LE is a big hit on here for vocals (and acoustic), but it's not going to suit every voice (or every guitar or whatever).

| Look at the Earthworks line. Not any color, but they catch detail and transient very well. It's my first try on bowed instruments and drum overhead (unless I need a lot of low end). The RE20 is a good one to have around. You might try the PR40 on kick as well. Most of the specially designed Kick mics are one trick ponies - at least the RE20 and PR40 can be used for a lot of other things.... -tINY |
