THE PERFECT MIC...?

Hi guys
I am an EMI records recording artist currently writing my second solo album and getting ready to cut vocals soon in my new studio. And I wanna buy myself the best possible mic for it...I use the Avalon 737 pre amp/compressor/ EQ with an Apogee converter...Which Mic would you recommend for the perfect pop/soul vocal? For that super rich and expensive 'to die for' sounding vocal!!!
I know particularly mics for vocals are a very individual and hard thing to give general advice on..Im just really curiosu to hear what you all recommend...I have already had the Neumann U87 recommended by one of my producers...Is that a good choice?
I would really appreciate your input...Thanks -T

U67, or U47 perhaps?
Maybe a C12?
It sounds like you have a bit of a budget.

Either that, or since it's mainly for one project (and you already have a U87 sitting around) just rent about 10 different mics, and test them all out. It might end up that on some of the ballads or whatever you use a far different mic than in a loud and layered chorus. The rental for a week of a few top mics (You can't be cutting vocals longer than a week at most right?) won't be much.

While you're at it, you might want to try a few different pres as well.

and the Elam 251 - an orignal will cost you about $18 g's - I would try the Telefunken USA remakes, they are a lot less and have warrenty.... oh and they sound pretty good.

You don't necessarily have to rent any of the mics - I would contact Vintage King and tell them what you are looking for and they can arrange for you to audition them. I would consider selling the 737 for a new pre and a compressor. For vocal compression you may want to start with an LA2A or CL1B or 1176. The new pacifica pre's sound great on vox as well.

Best of luck!

I would favour the U67 and maybe the U47 over the C12 and 251 in this case as TOMMYB indicates we're dealing with something with shades of soul. I wouldn't want something with too much high end. Still kinda depends, though. I can think of a lot of soul stuff that may well have been recorded on C12s or 251s.

U87? Depends on the voice. U87 will emphasise any presence but may sound harsh.

Good advice. There is no "perfect" vocal mic, only the one that is best for you. And that varies from singer to singer.

You might wish to try the Wunder CM7 - both versions (M7 capsule version, and KT47 capsule version). Also, their very large bottle mic (two transformers) with the 'older sound' transformer engaged (my favourite there). The Horch RM2J is also nice.

There is no perfect mic. Even the best microphone for a particular singer is not always the best mic. Different day, different song, all bets are off.

You're in a luxurious position, of only having to worry about the mic sounding good on one voice, not whoever walks through the door next.

Enjoy the auditioning process - look at 10-15 fancy mics (and even some not-so-fancy ones) and you'll almost certainly find something you love (and that loves your voice in return).
