| Lives for gear | What's the difference between the LA2A and LA3A (for vocals)
I've got a Distressor I'm using for vocals right now, just wondering if these are going to be smoother - and what's the difference between the two on vocals? I've see a bunch of people swearing by the LA3A on here...

if this helps at all, ive used the og la-3a's in studios before, i think there is a re-issue now. if memory serves the la-3a is literally a f.e.t. version of the la-2a...both were more or less intended to be vocal comp/limiters, hence the opto circuits so yes either should better for that app. | |

Johnkenn, what do you mean by 'smoother'? I suppose you could argue that the Distressor opto mode is smooth in one sense at least, if the impression I've got from listening on here is right and the Distressor's opto mode can sometimes lack grit or edge or something. I've heard some stuff that suggests it can be thin, so maybe I would look to something like the LA-2A (with valves) to fatten and warm things up a little. I think that might sound great on your voice, but is the Distressor really lacking a great deal for the sort of vocals you've posted on here lately?

For me the LA3A is a goto for tracking most vocals over all my other comps and I have Distressors, 1176, API 525. It controls the dynamics without squashing the sound, like riding the fader. Anyway that's how I like using compressors...dynamic control and the LA3A does just that nicely. But when it come to mixing vocals the 1176 gets to take over and the LA3A gets used on the electric guitars. Nic |

The difference is: LA 3A - LA 2A = LA 1A

So, what you all are saying is that the LA3A is one better than the LA2A? Crap - I gotta try out the 33609 then...
