Kings of leon / Ethan johns

Whew just got through listening to this new record by the kings of leon produced by ethan johns & Angelo Petraglia at blackbird & sunset sound.

What an amazing record !

The songs, playing, sound and mastering is the best i've heard in years - reverb heaven..

Did anyone here work on the engineering of this record ?

While I didn't work on it our senior assistant, Lowell Reynolds did... he's on a bunch of cool stuff this year, Neil Young's "Heart of Gold" 5.1 Theatrical Release Soundtrack, KOL, The White Stripes new record and an upcoming Beck record...all done in Studio D at Blackbird.
The reverb is the Studio D Chamber, btw.
All Natural...

I'm just listening to this record for the first time right now. My god, it sounds great!

Actually, I read an interview with Isaac Brock and he suggested that the album was recorded with almost no overdubs, including vocals. It sounds like it... like a REAL rock and roll record...

Ethan Johns is a frickin genious. Plain and simple. If I had anyone to pick from, he'd be the guy.

God, I just love the use of reverb on this album. I would love to know more about the chamber, etc. Amazing drum sounds, too.

Man, I love Ethan Johns so much, I love the sound of every record he's worked on (at least that I've heard). Its funny, I was just admiring how cool Blackbird is last night, and then I picked up the new Kings record to review for a radio station I DJ for and saw that it was recorded there (and at Sunset). Interesting that the record was done at the D room, I always thought Ethan Johns was way into Neves, I would have predicted the A room.

No doubt.

This is the first King's of Leon album I have heard and I absolutely love it. It really kicks ass.

This is one of the better sounding albums I have purchased in a long time. It actually has some dynamics.

I hope their older records are as good as the new one.

I just got through listening to my promotional copy of On Call, it does sound really nice. I would have liked to see even more dynamics on the master but for todays standards it's pretty good. The recording does sound very nice. I love that it starts out with keyboards and then the bass kicks in then drums. The reverb does sound nice as well as the panning. I love that guitar on the right. The drums sound very nice as well. Check out the screen shot I've included.

This is their (and John's with them) worst record, but it still is a great sounding one. Another good one is the new Clutch record.

Not completely on-subject but I saw them last summer w/ U2. The Kings were boring, pretentious asses and I could never buy any of their CD's based on this experience. They played a SUPER LONG set that was really stiff. The audience grew weary of this and stopped cheering between songs. The singer got all butt-hurt and started acting bitchy. This was a stupid move and the audience ate them alive with foll on "boo" and "boring" chants. Then the singer insulted the audience before leaving the stage.

Haven't heard the new album, but I spent a lot of time with their last one. The band rocks for sure, but I'm always on the fence on whether the band rocks enough to make up for those ridiculous vocals.

He sounds exactly like the "m'kay?" guy from South Park.

OK people... lets get it back on track here.

Ethan Johns and company did a fantastic job on all of the KoL records. I'm sure I'm not alone in striving to achieve some of the sounds heard on these albums.
SO
Anyone care to discuss the recording techniques employed in recording these albums?

FWIW I had the fortunate opportunity to hang out with the KoL after a show at a brew pub in Troy, NY. They were "stiff" at that show as well, and I asked them about that. They said it's the lack of energy of the audience that gets them down and makes it hard to get into the performance. I'm sure anyone who is a musician here can relate in a big way. Those boys are WAY down to earth and fun to hang with.

Unfortunately, I was not at all into talking about audio with them at that point...DOH!

I haven't heard the new record yet but I've got their first two as well as the old EP. Love those guys records but as someone mentioned earlier, they are boring as hell live.

You can check out some pics of the sessions at Ethan Johns' website:

http://www.threecrowsmusic.com/studio.htm

Looks like some kind LDC over the kit in the first pic (U67?). If you look at every other pic on his website of different groups he has Coles on OH.

God, ****, I think this is the stupidest, least musical comment I've ever read on this forum. If I were one in the band or one who had worked on this album and you were to tell that shite to my face, I think I'd just atomize you.

You haven't even bought that album, you're a VIP, as we can all see from the cleverly hidden hint that yours is a promotional copy. It's all nice, it's not good or bad, it's nice. Nice as in 'I could have done it soooo much better' or at least 'I would have done it all a little bit different, y'know...'.

That guitar on the right, man, yeah, that right channel, much better than the left. I think it's mastered better, as well.

And then that picture. What is that, a prototype drawing of your new hairstyle?
Is that how we're supposed to perceive music?

Wow, that's the new way. Forget about CDs, forget about selling them. Just hand out promotional copies of analyzer sheets. Great record man, look at the right channel!

Sorry, this isn't personal, but I mean, we're talking about a rock'n'roll record.
Remember, rock'n'roll?

Huh. As if making great music for us to listen to isn't enough. Now they really need to focus on putting on a great show. Maybe it's time for glam rock to make a comeback

Well I could say the same for you Agli... what kind of name is that?

What on EARTH does that have to do with the topic at hand which is the KOL album.

I've only heard the single, it def has a nice lush sound to it. I'm sure the lovely Studio D chamber had a little something to do with it. I love that space, it sounds magical just talking in there. I assume it was tracked on the 80B then as well then?
