How to convert audio to MIDI notes in Pro Tools LE?

Is there an RTAS (or VST) plug-in that will convert a gated kick track into MIDI notes so that I can trigger BFD?

If not, how else does one do this "in the box"? (Why did I ever sell that Aphex Impulse?!)

Two words-
Sound Replacer!

Not midi notes, but I've been using it for (god has it really been this long) ten years to fatten up whimpy drum hits.

Alternate method-
use a real kickass drummer and track in a big room with great mics and a Neve console.

That always ends up sounding better to me in the long run, and mixing is much easier than a bunch of artifical junk.

MIDI in LE

Use the tab to transient feature.

Just tab to a kick hit, then using the "; button" (I think its been so long since I've done this I forget a few command keys lol) to move your cursor down to the midi track (placed beneath it) and then insert a midi note.

Does this make sense? I'm tired.

Really? I'm mixing the track - I didn't record it and whoever did managed to bus a loud maracas to the kik track. Plus, the drummer is dead+famous and the reason for the whole recording.

I would very much like to keep the dynamic of the original performance so Sound Replacer and manually dropping in a sample both won't work.

I've been using the demo of Drumagog for two days now and I can safely say that IT SUCKS. I've got a super-clean gated representation of the kick drum but Drumagog keeps coming up with it's own time signature. The MIDI output from it is even worse. It varies all over the place from the original track. DO NOT tell me to "tweak it" - that's what I've been doing for the last two days.

That looks very cool but they haven't ported it to Mac yet (my OS). Being VST only, it could be sketchy as a wrapped plug-in but I'll keep an eye on them.

As for Drumagog... I did manage to get it to finally retrigger a useable kick track using their internal sounds but it was only after I'd reduced my own kick track to just it's attack only. That doesn't seem like any sort of "quick and easy" method at all. Especially as the presets allow you to specify the incoming signal as kick or snare. It shouldn't be getting so many false triggers from the longer waveform. It would still retrigger random "full velocity" hits that I had to go back and replace manually though.

To their credit, I tried it out on the snare track (even though I was happy with my sound) and that was pretty much flawless. I'll certainly try the BFD version if they put out a demo but I stand by my statement that it's useless for MIDI.

Dude- sound replacer will rock your world. You keep all the dynamics, and the learning curve is nonexistent. You may still be able to buy 24 hour liscenses for it if you already have an ilok and are willing to deal with the short term headache. Or if you have an older os and Limewire...
I won't even advocate that solution. But I will mention it!

Yeah, that looks like the way to go. That may be just the thing to get me to commit to that Musicians Bundle. Really is too bad that Drumagog didn't do better with MIDI or BFD (the demo triggers BFD but still with the timing issues). At least Sound Replacer does allow triggering multiple samples for dynamics, which I didn't know. Thanks.
