what mic for bottom snare?

I've been using an sdc with success for that app.
But Having only one couple I normally use them for overheads.
Is a dynamic mic adapted for that? Would an other 57 do the job nicely?

If it is a good or great sounding snare then yes the 57 will work.
If you can (but it is a more expensive mic unfortunately) Sennheiser MD441 thumbsup

Almost anything will work because it ends up being so EQ'd and gated.
I guess rejection from the other "good" sounds that the kit/drummer are making in order to gate it to death.

My opinion?

NO mic

I usually use an SDC if available. Otherwise another '57 is perfectly fine.

I was a "no mic on the snare bottom" guy for a while...but once I gave it a serious shot I was sold...now I wouldn't do drums without it...adds so much "crack" and life to the snare. Good ol' 57s on top and bottom make me happy. I've tried some other mics, including small and large cap condensers, but the 57 has been my all around favorite for that role.

Audix i5 on top, '57 on bottom. Sounds great.

i5

The answer somewhat depends on what sound you are going for, and the type of snare drum being used.

I am currently in favor of a 57 on top, and an Audix i5 on the bottom. The i5 is cheap, but it'd be a really useful mic even if it wasn't,just like the 57. In those weird cases where a 57 on top doesn't sound right, the i5 will often sound right. Thus, you end up with a nice backup option.

For me, recording under the snare is a must, unless you're tracking a band that's going for that modern-rock tiny snare sound, which is definitely a single mic on top situation.

one more thing

Oh yeah, when mic'ing under the snare, remember:
1) always check phase with the top mic
2) point bottom mic away from the kick drum so that the rejection area on the mic is keeping the kick from bleeding through - this will help avoid incorrect gate triggering and avoid adding unwanted ambience to your kick drum

I used to mess with condensors under snare and pretty much went back to SM57's. 441 is a premium under snare setup, the guys at the Jam Room use it 100% under snare and the sound is excellent.

if the drummer bumps mics the tiny shure sm-98 works. it has a screw-on adapter thing that makes it hypercardioid. the adapter helps control the bleed from the other stuff somewhat.

Has anyone tried a Royer 121 on snare bottom? I have one that I want to try on drums and I'm trying to figure out where it would be most usefull.

In another thread someone suggested placing a Royer 121 between the snare bottom and the kick, so that the brighter rear of the mic picks up the snares and the mellower side gets the beater of the kick.
Could help getting rid of the "papery" (plerrrrr) sound you often get on the bottom of a snare.
Might be tricky to get all the phase relationships right, but worth a try.
Maybe saturate the preamp, compress, squash?

A 414 or a 57 seems to be the mics I end up with.
