Question Shinybox Ribbon Microphones?

anyone have any opinions on how these ribbons stack up against the big boys? say a Royer 121 or an AEA R84/92? very interested in the Shinybox w/ the Lundahl transformer, and the price is definitely right...

I just bought the SB MXLs about a month ago and love them as drum OH!! SB are the only ribbon mic's I own / heard so I can't really compare them but I am very happy with them! IMHO worth every penny.

Good mics- yes. Hang with the AEA or Royer? Not in my opinion. Dull and lackluster in most applications by comparison, even with the Cinemag upgrade. Having said that, I do use them all the time, great on guitar amps, room mic on the drums, we even used one on a vocal track with great succuess.
Did that help, or just con fuse the issue?

good to hear, and congrats on finding some awesome OH mics!

if these are as good as im hoping they are, im thinking of getting a matched pair with the Lundahl tranny. a matched pair of those is a couple hundred less than just ONE royer...so itd be very interesting if these can hold their own with the best of em not saying necessarily better, just hold their own.

No, I haven't tried the Lundahl, it could be a great thing. However, the transformer I have in one of them is the same one that AEA puts in the R84. My experience is that the same transformer does not make the same mic. Good luck----

FWIW I was told when I ordered the mics that they were so close to spec since they were hand tuned that the "matched pair" was not necessary. So I saved the $ and bought seperate mics. Also I bought two SB MXC's as room microphones for the drums. Once again I was happy. I haven't had a chance to check either out on other sources yet. Also I think if you are not happy with the mic's within a reasonable time they can be returned. If that is the case what do you have to loose?? If they are give you what you want then keep them and save the $$ and buy whatever else you need.
