EV Re-27 for night club or PA use

Omar at EV technical support says this microphone would work fine for PA use and announcements in a loud nightclub or bar. Has anyone used it for this purpose? Any thoughts?

I am sure it would work fine but why not use something tried and true like a Shure SM58 that is boat loads cheaper and used day in and day out for live work? Just curious as to why the RE-27.

I LOVE the Re27.... I would definately NOT use it in a bar/nightclub though, its too nice of a mic to get dropped, splashed with beer, exposed to smoke, etc etc.

Besides recording I also DJ in different places, so I would be the only using this mic and taking good care of it. I don't like the way I sound on a SM 58, but do like my voice through a Re-27. If it was for a band or others I would use a SM 58. Thanks

If you are actually holding the RE27 instead of having it on a stand, be aware that it does not have the best handling noise rejection. Its not meant to be handheld.

If you don't like the SM58 (can't blame you, I don't really like it either...) try one of the Audio Technica handheld mics. They're really good for live vocals.

For the record, the only thing I think an SM58 works great on is on a podium, where the person speaking won't be right up on the mic. With a well-tuned PA, the 58 will sound great in this application. I think the proximity effect on it is what makes it sound so honky, in a bad way.

It sounds like you would be using it for both recording and live. Under those circumstances I think it would make sense to use the RE27. I assume you have a mic stand of some type for when you DJ. It would allow you to just standardize on one mic for all of your activities which not only keeps you from buying a second mic but allows you to keep your mic technique consistent. I think it could be a good call. You just have to develop some spider sense for (a) thieves and (b) clumsy idiots carrying beer.

The EV RE-27 is a very nice dynamic microphone with high details thanks to powerfull neodymium capsule magnet. High frequency are rather lifted up.

Now for live application, it is not a handheld microphone, for proper use it should be on a stand best with specific elastic suspension. The RE-27 is very heavy and requires a heavy and stable boom stand. This would be more a studio setup most likely not practical for live club situation.

Like PoorGlory, I would care too much about this microphone to have it abused in Club situation.

A handheld microphone would do a better job. If you want to stick to the Electro Voice brand : EV N/D767 or N/D967 both supercardioid with neodynium capsule magnet and vocal favorable presence high frequency lift.

Also a robust and versatile condenser microphone to consider, the Neumann KMS-105 (supercardioid).
