Better preamp only? For multi-purpose? Yes. No doubt.

The reason I can't get rid of my LA610 is the "everything" it brings. Sometimes the pre is just right...the DI KILLS on bass and EP...sometimes it's the EQ/comp at mix time. It's just always a handy tool at some point. If I were to get a great River Me1nv w/ the Eq1nv, RedDI(or U5), and an La2a, it would be WAY more bucks.

You may not find anything at that price that has the same exact features. I have a feeling the UA will leave it's sonic imprint. As stated above, on some things it might be perfect, but if you're using it on everything, ultimately you may wish for something with less coloration. I think that pre might sound a little sluggish for metal stuff.

You can always add compression/eq/plugins, etc... to a track, but you're pretty much stuck with the sound of a mic pre. There's not a lot out there in that price range that has a mic pre, (limited eq), and compression. Maybe for a few hundred more check out the new Avalon Mercenary Edition 737. Or lose the comp and get a Vintech X73i. Or just get a great mic pre and add the processing later, which is what I would do. I'd say Pacifica, but I think the price just went up. Get the best mic preamp you can afford. Compression and eq are less important, IMHO.
