why do you dislike the M147?

Hey guys. I did a search on the Neumann M147 and found that most people around here don't like it. Most of the posts didn't say WHY they didn't like it though. Is it because there are better mics in that price range, or is it because it just sucks period, or what? I'd like to know your reasons!

We had one which was noisy from new, nothing Sennheiser UK could do to it made it any quieter it went back quite a few times. Anothger one localy also had the same issue. Apart from that it sounded OK for voice over work, but it didnt really have any real 'personality' to it.

Though it was a little faster than the DUKW, 7mph in the watter is still a little slow for me.

i think, for me, with the M147 it is not so much that it is inherently a 'bad' microphone, it's just an overpriced microphone.

i would get one if they were still available for the price of $1399 USD, which is how low the price was at one point before Sennheiser decided to seriously jack the price.

Ahhh, I have the chance to pick a m147 up quite cheap (still a lot of cash), and I got all excited... I thought: first check it at gearslutz!

I've read: Lifeless... nothing like the real thing, the way cheaper tlm49 sounds better... ahhhh...

I actaully compared one back to back with a u47 fet
and the 47fet was much deeper and had more air above it .
The M147 wasnt that bad , it was cool on a my bass cab but
it just didnt have alot of depth to my ear .

It was my first ever high end mic (in my non-experienced times). The second day I kneeled down at my dealer and begged him that I can change it for something else (I changed it for U87). Sounded quite horrible to me ...

I quite like it as the far mic on a kick drum.
Paired with an M88 (with the 147 flipped out of phase) it can sound nice and thuddy.

Unfortunately it is the only application that I like it in.

I had one for about a year (this was over 8 years ago so the memory has faded). I tried to like it, but no love. It didn't have good detail. Highs were a little hazy, and mine was noisy.

Not a bad mic but not a great mic. Had one over here for 6 months. Unimpressed. Tried to like it but it just didn't excell at anything I tried it on.
