I like to use an 87 through an Avalon 737 with a bit of compression and a 451 through a Focusrite Red 6 through a Summit DCL 200. I love using tubes on my chain to record acoustic guitars.

DW Fearn preamp sounds warm and beautiful to me on acoustic guitar (and voice, overheads, lots of things).

Love my AEA ribbon pre with ribbon mics ( AEA's, Royers, etc). Also like the Funkenwerks V78 (with a Peluso 2247LE - sounds sooo warm). But my Great River MP2 or Pacifica works quite well with acoustics, too.

ALSO, try an LA-3A, LA-2A or moded LA-4 with any of these and you'll be happy. Also the SPL TD adds some sweet harmonics. Portico 5042 works well in the chain as well. Crane Song Phoenix is nice, too.

Selling my 737... Fell out of love with it. All of these pres sound better to me than the 737.

BTW: I also have a 610 and replaced the stock tube with a Mullard NOS 10M 12AX7 - AWESOME!! Different pre all together. Was going to sell it but tried this swap first... Much improved box. Keeper now. NICE on Bass.

In the end, you just need a quality pre, quality mic(s) quality converters, and a talented guitarist and you'll be Rockin'.

IMO, most high-end pres work well - it's just a choice as to color, etc.

I use a Pendulum Audio MDP-1a for solo fingerstyle acoustic and classical guitar. It's a wonderful preamp. Clean, detailed, euphonic, 3-D, sensual, etc.

if you have not tried the hamptone hvpt2 (ithink thats the model) it's awesome for the funds [2 channels for 1G]. i have some grace design 101's and an API 312's and LOVE the hamptones for acoustic. It rocks. Full, detailed and character.

I find my Presonus ADL 600 works pretty well on acoustic guitar. Last night, I A/B'd it against an RNP using my Taylor 12-string and a Soundelux ifet7 -- the ADL 600 kicked the RNP's butt. Much more detail on the ADL 600 - handled the transients really well. It's a pretty minor test -- but the difference was significant.

i would second this and add that i have used the Hamptone and the 737 side-by-side on acoustic guitar and for whatever it is worth preferred the Hamptone.... and it's $1300 cheaper plus it's stereo!

Thats interesting. I tried the Solo 610 (with the stock tubes) and found it not detailed, clear and open enough for acoustic instruments. Did the tube change correct all this?
It works nicely for some harsher voices though. Overall I prefer the Solo 110 by far.

I've rarely needed an acoustic to be overly detailed as it brings out every single flaw you never wanted to hear......

So back to your question...a tube pre can be clean and clear...yes, its nearly all I use for acoustics.

Most important part of recording is the part when the artist practices before you
turn on your mic pre.

couldn't agree more...I hated the avalon until I used it on acoustic guitar, now I get what it's all about, you have to be VERY careful about gain with that box though.....not my absolute favorite but would never hesitate to use one....

hands down winner for me on piano and acoustic guitar is the EAR 824 mic pre....follow it with an ear 822q EQ and cut straight to tape....I literally mean TAPE....if I don't have the luxury of tape I go to the DAW but follow the EQ with a compressor (something nice and slow and easy, think la2a) to keep transients from murdering my a/d...guess that was a little more than an opinion about a mic pre....sorry I get carried away

Esoteric Audio Research 824 dual mono mic preamplifier.....a VERY nice tube mic pre for acoustic guitars...
