CHOOSE; EQ harware with PLUGIN Comp OR vice versa

Hi ,,, given limited funds .....buy a hardware EQ with plugins for comp

or spend the money on a hardware comp and use the box for EQ?

My needs are for stereo tracking ....ac/el gtrs ...bass and voice

WHICH of the above 2 is better suited to ITB ?

hardware compressor for sure. the plugs won't give you the vibe of a high quality comp. just make sure that your tracking sounds are 90% there so you don't have to do anything to radical with the plugin EQ
cheers

Why do you feel you need a stereo EQ or compressor for tracking guitars, bass or voice?

Save the dough and buy the best mics, suitable mic pres and converters for your recordings.

You can live with a lot ITB, except for mics - they don't make microphone plug ins.....

I have to agree with the two posters above.
With great mics and pres you'll have less need to tweak you recording.

I can live with plugin EQ's, there are some very good ones about. I've never been totally happy with plugin compressors though.

Another vote for EQ plugins/hardware compressors. I've noticed even some of my middle of the road hardware compressors sound better than the plugins.

Thanks guys ....looks unanimous ! COMP

I have a TG2 and think in stereo for the fattest possible ac gtr and el gtr .

obviously voice and bass will go mono .

Maybe a mono compressor since voice (and bass?) will be the hardest to tame .

My setup is pretty good ....1947 Gibson LG2 ....pair of Beyer mc930`s , a Geffel MV210, an Alesis GT tube AM62 LDC...into the TG2 into a Mytek 192 into PT002

The EQ thing gets me going because of the dark woody ac gtr , the mid heady TG2 and the flat (if not dark?) mc 930`s
I wonder aboout a cleaner pre (BG2?) or a pair of EQ`s (speck?)
oh .... to track voice , I need a compressor with this girl

any experienced and kind slutz care to sift through this for me ? thanks, Paul

Did you notice the advice about spending money on mics?

Better idea than an outboard EQ or a new pre-amp.

A good hardware compressor is sometimes handy - though you don't need it on electric guitar - they are already squashed to a narrow dynamic range. You can get away without the compressor on tracking too - if you have 24 bits and set your gain right......

H i ,,,thanks ..oh yeah ! I`m paying close attention . So ...MICS ,huh?

I thought a brighter mic (sort of what I`d need to get the definition I feel is lacking with the dark gtr and mid heavy pre ) was considered undesirable .

I actually posted some samples of the Beyers,DPA`s and a Rode NT4 ...I liked the Rode alot and it was brighter .....maybe an inferior mic for ideal situations but it kind of made the gtr speak better with more snap . Is that what you mean about going for mics instead of pre`s and eq`s ????
here`s the thread with my samples ...scroll down to post 14 I think

Anyone tryed the Beyer MC 930?

thanks
