using the massive passive shelves

i used the massive passive shelves on vocals yesterday and was really suprised by the outcome... i think i read somewhere before that thrill uses the massive passive in a similar way...

i used:

"10dB" Boost @ 100Hz (shelf) - helped to bring out the "chest" / "fullness"

"10dB" Cut @ 270Hz (shelf) - helped to reduce the "mud"

"8dB" Boost @ 2K2 (shelf) - helped to improve "presence"

"10dB" Boost @ 5K8 (shelf) - helped to improve "presence"

all with wide bandwidth. i didnt really play around with the bandwidth much.

High Pass filter @ 39Hz

vocal chain was Hip Hop Vocals > SM7b > 1073DPA > Distressor > Massive Passive > Rosetta 800

i'm not experienced in using shelves in this way so it was new territory for me.

its scary how much you can boost on the MP without it sounding bad.

i couldnt get the 10K + air i wanted with the massive passive so i used another eq.

i'm thinking shelves can be used in this way on alot of other stuff to. i love the massive passive but i still find it harder to use than a conventional parametric eq (due to my inexperience).

thrill and others... do you have any other tips for using the massive passive shelves (especially technique / use for narrow bandwidth)?

Hey,

Over the last few years if i've tracked the vocals in the mix i just use the middle 2 shelves and the HP filter on vocals. I set the bandwith control to taste.

I use the lower of the 2 for cutting and the one up for boosting. I really let the comps i choose on the vocals in the mix do the bulk of the work.

If the MP doesn't get used on a vocal i'll use a Great River or Neve.
