vintech x73(i) verse Neve 1073dpa?

maybe i'm missing something, but what is the difference between these. vintech is said to be an exact replica, even using same parts? why would i buy the enve 1073dpa for 3k, if i can get the same thing for half price?

maybe i'm missing something. just in case, if the 1073dpa is just more original or something, how much better is it than the vintech? i see a lot of people talking about the vintech, and not the 1073dpa...any reason?

since we have a million pacifica fans, how does the pacifica match up to these guys?

It's the same reason you can give the same recipe to two chefs and end up w/ two different results.
If you can afford it, have Wolfgang puck make your dish.

At this level, ALL good choices!

First, don't worry about the mob mentality, The Neve is great and the Vinetch is damn good itself. At this level, we're talking about getting 90% close to "the" sound, so much of the debate is really splitting hairs... the point is, decide what is important:

Do you NEED "the" Neve sound or do you want a damn good sounding pre. For the second question, both work great.

As for the Pacifica, it is totally a different animal, great pre, just a different color in the palette.

At this level, you can feel good about any of the purchases yu make, I've owned all three you are asking about so I say this with 100% confidence. Decide what is important to you and go with it. If buyin the VIntech saves you money to then go buy another "color," then so be it. If you already have many other pres and you're looking or that final 10%, then maybe the Neve is right. If The "Neve" direction is in question, then certainly consider the Pacifica, BIG bang or the buck!

ALL good choices.

P.S. Bear in mind, if you're talking about the Vintech X73, then you also get the EQ section, which you don't on the Neve DPA. Don't get me wrong, I also own the Neve DPD.

I've been in several "shootouts" with the X73 and 1073 modules. In every instance the X73 performed exactly the same as the 1073 modules. You could flip between the channels and not hear it change one bit.

While I'm a big fan of nice preamps, I would say that the bigger factor in your sound would be your summing. You could have all Neve vintage or reissue modules and if ProTools is still doing all your summing in the box, then you're missing an important link in the chain when it comes to getting that imaging and gain structure that makes "that sound" possible.

Actually, I think the first thing is finding the right mic for your voice...then the pre can enhance/muddy that. Just like in my Vintech/Great River post, I don't think one is patently better, just subjectively different. And I know which one I like best now. You have to narrow it down for yourself...so you can sleep at night. Shooting these pres out is cathartic...that way I don't have to wonder how much better it would have been if I had just had "x" mic pre, or this or that...

some things to help advice:

-this is my first pro pre, after the MOTU
-i was going to buy the TLM103...haven't yet, but don't wanna spend more than 1k
-this is primarily for male vocals

some questions:
-should i consider the A designs Tube pre verse teh vintech, or should my first pre be non tube? MP2a
-is there a Pacifica verse vintech test i could here?
-should i buy mono with eq or dual with an external eq. the thing is this...i wnat an eq to run on stereo bus, shuold it be separate? or is there a great eq i can cahin into a pre amp and also use for stereo bus?

are 2 vintech mono together better than a dual pacifica alone?. i was thinking of maybe the vintech mono, and then dual tube by a designs. trying to figure out the eq incorporation.

peppa

p.s. is there a site where i can listen to male vocal comparison between these 5 pres. it would answer all my questions
