Unhappy Echoplex help

I just bought an echoplex from eBay, but it doesn't seem to be working. The output signal is extremely low and crackley. I tried cleaning the heads but that didn't do anything. Maybe it is the tape? If so, how do I change the tape? Otherwise what else might be the problem?

Thanks!

New tapes are available. I can't remember off the top of my head who makes them...Not Ernie Ball, but some other accessory manufacturer does. Any major chain store can order them.

As for the repairs....take it to any shop that works on tape decks as they're pretty simple to fix.

Dunlop used to make replacement cartridges. I am not sure who makes new ones at this point but here is a guy who will rewind a used one with Quantegy or Ampex tape:
