well the basic, bottom of the barrel kyma setup will cost you about 3500$US just to start. on the other end max will only cost you 500$ and you can use any hardware. for those reasons i had to go with max. i would love to try out a kyma, especially to see if the software is less "programy" and test out the realtime processing. what would totally win me over would be if they updated the capybara drivers to function with other software appz. ![]()

| i really want to try kyma but i dont know anyone who has it, i use max msp at university alot and am going to buy a copy for myself when my next part of my loan comes in after easter, i think Max msp is a good investment, both for university work reason aswell as keeping up my problem solving and its just cool! tillyX

Kyma is superbly integrated hardware + software. The MIDI interface, word clock, time code, converters, and software, are all locked together tight as a drum. The heartbeat of the system is the word clock and everything else runs in terms of it. No doubt, you can use Max for "live" or semi-live stuff (e.g., processing live input in the studio), but the thing with Kyma is that you can set the total latency of the system -- from ADC through software through DAC -- by clicking a mouse. This is a lot different from setting buffer sizes on the input and output sides of a DAW or instrument host, to my mind; in Kyma all the processing in between is scheduled with sample-accuracy. It's a marvel. It's quite technical, however, and takes a good long while to master. I suppose the same is true of Max/MSP. I'm not as familiar with the algorithms in MSP as Kyma, so I can't make a detailed comparison of, for example, the morphing or synthesis algorithms. -synthoid

Just geek out and start using SuperCollider. Plus, it's free.

If you're looking for software, you should check out plogue bidule. It's easier to use than MAX, and, while it might not be quite as versatile yet, it's a whole lot cheaper.
