Beautiful vocals for a 14 year old.I think at that point he had only had about 4 nose jobs.

I loved it in the "We are the world" video, where they are using probably 20 ElaM251's and C12's, but they have the most ghetto pop filters that look like they're made out of pantyhose and coat hangers.

Such a talent and what a shame he snapped.
I've rediscovered my Jackson Five stuff and early Michael Jackson material and they just don't make tunes and recordings like that anymore.

Berry Gordy's a genius with those mixes of stuff like "The Love You Save, ABC "etc.
The groove just pops out of the mix and the tunes just make ya feel good.

It's too bad that Michael went over the edge, but he is not alone.
Look at all the sad stories in Hollywood these days.

I tried to search a bit last night...but only came up with this video. But I´m sure that there must be more somewhere.

Yeah....amazing clip! Notice how relaxed he is during the hole session! thumbsup

excellent video ! thanks a lot !thumbsup
I wonder how it was possible to record in such a big room with a lot of natural reverb, who says vocal booth are mandatory ?
maybe it's the 80's... also the claps/feet movements should have been a nightmare for the engineer ...

It's a shame what he did to himself. One of the truly great talents of our age. I saw a clip of him on the Sullivan show. He must have been 9 or 10, and the sheer polished professionalism of the look at the camera as he came out of his spin, struck the pose, tipped his hat and hit the note dead on was obviously the result of years of hard work.

Who are the child stars who grew up to be sane adults? It's a very short list.

sweet. great post.

with quincy in the studio, i wouldn't have thought mj was so

a) positive
b) fragile
c) feminine

not as hard on himself as i thought he would be. i thought he shy in public, but now i can see that is his true color.

still he is the king (she-king?), regardless of the gender issues. just wish he had done that album with the neptunes instead of JT!!!!

Sure would like to know what mics are on those other background booms. They wouldn't be there if there wasn't some other mic effort going on. Some kind of overhead ambient approach I would guess. Maybe Bruce could swing by for a comment.

The other mics are obviously there for the all-star choir recordings ..no?

Awesome talent! - but after the modulation there are some slight intonation issues with the vocal (MJ is slightly flat on some of the higher notes). I'm sure that wa not the take that was used in that section of the song. Was autotune around then?

My guess is that after they listened back to the take, he went straight in and sang it again. Auto Tune was not around in '85 and MJ is one of the persons that you wouldn't use it on anyway.

Damn, I´m taking over this thread! tutt Bruce..help.

Thats the way we track vocals ...why would you put someone in the closet.......

and nope no auto tune..... they might have kept that track, it would have been buried under the choir anyway

As much as i can remember most of that song was tracked on the 8108/28

and Quincy

Thanks for the link,, it was cool

I wonder, if this was done before ore after the choir session?

It seems they have everything prepared for the crowd to appear and Michael is doing the final guide for them? Awesome! Tripled vocals - three different positions - sound like a record already. I wonder what they used as reverb

Thanks for sharing!

There have been many, many great talents out there that are never acknowledged let alone discussed. A shame that so much is made here about talent while ignoring so many others. The imbalance and sheer fawning over this guy was tired decades ago.

session

That session was in Studio A at A&M Studios, that was the recording of Michael before the others showed up, the backrounds you hear are only Michael and Lionel Ritchie. This recording was taking place as the American Music Awards was getting over and the performers were almost on their way. There were about 10 engineers and 15 assistants on that session to make things go smoothly, the Engineer responsible for the sessions was Humberto Gatica, Humberto also cut the basic tracks and yes that it JR Robinson, as well as greg phillinganes and Neil Stubenhouse playing bass. The basic tracks were cut at Lion Share studios and the vocals were done at A&M, The song was mixed by Humberto at Lion Share. The vocal sessions went on till 8am the next morning.

Yeah.. At Lion Share. I actually own that board now.. It was down to two nearly identical 8108's. I bought this one because it was funnier.
