Audio Interface to Replace Mixer?

Does anyone here use their audio interface instead of their mixer?

I'm upgrading from 2-in-2-out audio interface (M-Audio Audiophile Firewire) to a multi-in audio interface (M-Audio Firewire 1814) and I'd like to simplify my setup and have less gear that takes less space.

I only have two mono synths and I plan to get maybe one more stereo synths so I have more than enough unbalanced inputs to plug synths into the audio interface.

I was curious to know if anyone else here does this (even if it's with another audio inteface like a Digi 002, Digi 96 or 192, MOTU, Metric Halo, Edirol, etc...) and what are the advantages and disadvantages of it. Also, are there any issues to be aware of (ie. latency, etc)?

Would appreciate some insight into this.

sold my mixer when i replaced it with the motu 2408 mkIII, 24 i/o and 24i, running on motu's pci-424 card and using logic as the DAW and in-the-box mixer. it was a substantial pain in the arse creating the new environment page for all the input objects, but once that was done, so far it's working great. latency is barely if at all noticeable. i can play my nord rack3 from my Q's keyboard and it's like as though it's going through any outboard digital mixer. the ability to process using the plugz in the daw (including the powercore, etc.) is great. i hope to add a duende at some point in the next year or so, which will really distinguish my current set up from anything i've used previously.

plus, the ability to use my 32-channel logic (mackie) control rig as the mixer interface definitely puts the key in the lock as far as i'm concerned.

it can be done, and it is very clean logistically and hyper-powerful, if done correctly. good luck,

vic

Many people use the RME interfaces with TotalMix for this purpose.

Works very well.
