Thread Starter | What hard disc for recording on G5 Dual?
Hello all, Small question: my built in 80 gig hard disc is full...(duh.... ), and I bought this Lacie external FW harddrive. Really like it, but real time recording on it is a bit slow I guess. (and also not very handy when you also own a fw SSL Duende)I understand that you can practically built any HD in the G5, so the cheaper models are cool too (so...the 'windows' models) but I have to look for IDE and for 7200 RPM. (I own the G5 Dual 1.8 ghz, 2 year old model) Does anyone of you have any suggestions? Over here they sell Seagate, Maxtore, WD and Samsung. (around 80-90 euros for 320 gig) Also: I heard SATA II is backwards compatible, so that should work on my 'old' G5 right? Thanks for thinking along!

I've used a lot of different brands in my G5 and I haven't noticed a difference. I think more to the point is to have other storage to keep your files on; keeping your record-to drive empty is a big key to getting more speed. |

Yeah. Ditto that. But you don't have to go internal for the projects drive. What we do: • One big internal drive in the G5 as boot drive (where DAW applications live); • One big internal drive for samples (BFD and such, which don't like to live on the boot drive); • One big external LaCie FW drive for projects in session (and its been fast-enough, so far, for large trackings sessions); • And several back-up external LaCie units in a RAID configuration. Projects get moved to the RAID after each session and also backed-up on "hard" media (DVDs and such). So far it works very well. Maybe you need to look again at the specs on the LaCie drives; they're not all equal, and those new Lego-lookin' ones I've seen in the Apple stores are probably not fast-enough for audio, inexpensive though they be. Hope this helps... |

Hey guys, Thanks for thinking along. Deadulus, if I understand correctly, you record real time to the external Lacie? I am doing that right now but people told me that it is not the same as internal. I just went to the store, bought a 320 gig Western Digital, 7200 rpm, 8 mb, so I will try to make that work tonight. Bear with me! My ideal thing would be: 80 gig bootdrive that I have right now for Mac stuff, 320 gig for real time recording, and the Lacie (just a 160 gig) for daily backups, or something like that. Ofcourse I will need a bigger Lacie in the future, but for now this should help |

Sigh......found out that the clerk sold me an IDE. On their website I noticed that they sell SATA2 but not SATA. Like in said in my previous post: I heard that this is downwards compatible so my SATA MAC would accept this one. Am I right (before I return Monday to their store to trade it in)? Anyone? Thanks! |

get a SATA drive for your audio (all your project data) in your G5 i think either I or II will work - but check in the store... NEVER record audio on your system drive. It is busy doing system and application stuff. then backup your project data to external firewire and keep a clone of your system drive on ANOTHER firewire drive thus everything exists in 2 places. |

When I use my 80 gig as my OS drive, I guess it would be safe to intall this second HD internally right? That way it won't bother the system stuff and I can record real time to that HD right? | |
