Since I just got this for vocals, but am finding that my solidtube with telefunken tube through a 610 is beating it, I'm wondering what else it's good for...I want to keep it but need to find other uses for it... How would it be on Acoustic guitar/ Electric guitar amp (fenders)/ and micing a piano? Thank you |

Did a pre-prod session the other day with some soprano sax recorded in the stairwell through an sm7, it was just intended as a session to search for ideas...what we tracked sounds so interesting it's definetly staying on the record. Don't know how much of that can be attributed to the sm7 but it definetly did'nt get in the way. I also like it on guits, kick or particularly snare when the drummers playing sidestick...it captures a nice thick rimshot sound. Give it more time as a vocal mic though, when you get to the end of a mix you may learn to appreciate it in hindsight.

That's funny you mention rim shot...I actually found it to be amazing for precise handclaps with compression on it...It just didnt appear as popping and in front of the mix as tube mic through tube pre combo...The event ASP8's I have are very picky to what sounds foward and what doesn't...That's why they have been perfect...But that's off topic

I'm pretty sure you can use it wherever you'd use a 57... So on anything and everything.

Guitar amps, snare, hand percussion and sometimes horns are the best places for that microphone IME.

Since I made the switch from recording my own music, to recording other bands, I am REALLY suprised how the mic& preamp combination that worked great for 1 paticular application, can be "not too good" for the same application on a different artist and different style of music. In short, I would recommend keeping the SM7....it may be your best choice for a future artist.
