Chicago VI Console

Okay, I'm not really a Chicago fan, but the end of that song, 'Feelin Stronger Every Day' is amazing. I heard it on the radio and was really hooked.

Where or what was that album recorded on? The harmonic vocals and beat in that song are juiced!

The Olive story is neat, but I dunno if it has anything to do with the Chicago VI sound.

I always thought the 8016 replaced the Olive so quickly that nothing had ever even been recorded on it.

Pain killers, huh? Be careful... From my experience it's only the beginning. In fact, last Saturday in the park I took a vicadin at, I dunno, 25 or 6 to four and I can't remember the rest of the day. That was my introduction to barbituates. But hey, I'm a man and I can take it.

It's okay, Doug. Quitting the puns can be a hard habit to break.

Tony, Chris, wow, there are a lot of closet Chicago fans out there, and happenin cats at that! I would get on my high horse and trumpet the fact that we're "in the know" with regard to early Chicago's worth but the more humble side of me asks -- does anyone really know what time it is?

But, if you leave it now, this thread will lose the biggest part of you.

We've got, what, twenty five albums of this or something?

Yeah, I guess we're just a bunch of oldies (or Old Days, as I found out years later...)

As far as I've heard it was that neve 8016. If you watch the clips from "chicago at the ranch" or whatever it was called, you see them tracking the song on that NEVE. I've touched and fondled that console in the past. Actually, it's kind of a custom desk with PPM meters etc, the story goes is that the OLIVE was/is/will always be a real POS and George Martin helped Jim get the NEVE in a hurry to replace the disaster that was the OLIVE. I've read where olive claims that a few hits were recorded or mixed on it, I seriously doubt it though. I was told the board never worked.
I think todd probably has a few pics he can post that we took while visiting all the old Chicago gear. You know...all the gear that was burned up in the fire....

Console preamps.

None of these favorite sounding records used outboard preamps, just the one's that came with the console they booked with the studio.

So what's the difference between today's "sound" and these well recorded classics?

Look on the other side of the glass, it's what's in front of the mic, not what happens behind it.

I'd have to agree with Jim on that to some extent. Although I think gear can influence a sound (such as the introduction of the wah, distortion, that damn stupid Cher vocal pitch piece of crap trick, etc.)
I think people just don't know how to create space anymore. Very few bands have those songs that are catchy and arranged well.
It brings me to another problem as I take us further off topic. Why the hell do all of these new bands think they have more to say than their 60's-70's counterparts...make the songs 3 minutes again...even if a song has a catchy hook these days, after 4 and 1/2 minutes I'm pretty well wore out of hearing it appear 6 times in the song. KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID You are a pop artist not somebody from mensa.

I agree. If 6 people cover a song each one's going to sound different. People put too much emphasis on being creative. There's 8 notes, 12 tones, do what's already been done your own way. Simplify and re-vitalize, there's only 7 colors in the rainbow, but what's done with them paints the picture.

a lot of music is simple enough as it is, personally I prefer it when a band does something experimental and complex and 3 mins isnt substantial imo, its feels throwaway
