Signal Chain...

So I have my first outboard compressor on the way, the distressor. I am going to use it for tracking bass and other things. I have a U5 and am wondering if the Distressor should go before or after the mic preamp. I assume it should go after the mic preamp, but it would be more convenient to put it before the pre. So, will it work right to put it after the U5 and before the pre?

The U5 has line output - you don't need the pre. Bass >> U5 >> Distressor >> A/D. The pre would be optional - only if it has some coloring that you really like. Is it a Neve 1073? Otherwise it's just a redundant noise making extra piece of circuitry.

Shortest path = good. Usually.

Just so that we don't completely discredit all other companies that create Microphone Preamps:

There are plenty of other mic pres that can provide some sort of flavor to the sound. Just because it isn't a 1073 doesn't mean we should skip it.

Kiwi:
If you think the u5 sounds right for the job, just do what he suggested. That would be a fine signal path.
