Spectrasonics 610/ manufacturing dates

I was talking to a friend about my 610 and was wondering if anybody know if this is a 60's version or later,I've seen that the 70's versions had smoked glass and different knobs. I googled it but there's very little information on the web about it.

Thanks

The last I heard, Spectrasonics is still around. I have this info from years ago...hopefully it's still valid.

You are right. There are different 610's out there. The ones I use have the smoked glass and different knobs. Not sure which one is older.

Cheers

I don't know the dates. The units with the smoked glass are the newer units. The unit pictured above are the older ones. Do they sound different? NO. Open both units up and its all the same cards inside. It was strictly a face lift as far as I know. The units I opened up all had the same transformers and cards.

Are the input and output gain pots detented? What is the serial number?

I have serial numbers 008 and 009. Both have detented pots. Both have a barrier terminal connection for everything -- including the AC! One has the same knobs as above, and the other has a different kind. I had serial number 011 as well, and that had the same knobs in your photo. Funny, I never even thought about when they were made.

Go figure...

Cheers,
John

Michael,
as far as I know there are two different models that sound a bit different: well actually they're supposed to be the same (compression/limiting-wise) except for their gain structure:
basically you have the detented and the non-detented models: the detented models have 6dB gain loss for both input and output controls, resulting in a total of 12dB gain loss...

Interesting. Well until your and Johns post I didn't even know they made any units with detented pots. As John mentioned they would have to be very early models. The pair I had were in the 50-100 SN range if I remember right.

Just a side note. I worked at my friends studio the other day and he still has one of the two I sold him. I decided I can't work there anymore. It just makes me more pissed that I ever sold him my units!!!!

But that said, I won't pay what they are going for now days. I love that sound and that tone but the prices are just out of control. People were giving these things away 15 years ago and I watched 10 of them go into a dumpster myself. I grabbed 2 thinking that they would be good for something. I should have grabbed them all.

Damn hindsite!

I taught some recording classes recently, and one of the students is the son of the current owner of SpectraSonics. They are indeed still around and are even working on some new products. Thought that might be of interest.
