When he does the rolls, it's very obvious the share is tuned very tight for a crisp piccalo sound. That Roland drum machine sound that comes in on the 2 & 4 is obviously seperate, and I would guess sequenced along with a lot of the keyboard stuff.

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but that snare is either a trigger or a sample.

Oh yeah and it sounds bad. I'm not sure if that's been mentioned either.

So just to be clear: trigger, sample, sounds bad.

Those of you who think it's a trigger should listen again very closely wihtout watching the video. Just listen to beats 2 and 4 for the first minute or two and it should become clear that it's not a trigger.

When I was studying at art school we were taught that NICE = BAD.
So yeah, that snare is very very nice.

With snares you have to find the sound in the source itself rather than the mic or position if you know what I mean. This is especially true with a dry sound like that where you dont have a big room sound providing half of it for you. What the close mic and the overheads hear is sort of what you get.

I dont know about whether there was a trigger or whatever going on in the clip. I can say that it wasn't really my thing. I can appreciate how impressive it is, but it's just such a total snooze-fest! Just my opinion of course.

Check out the wack on that snare

There was one more type of snare sound I was looking for but can't find a decent sample at the moment.
That snare sound would be easy to get. Just tune it improperly. Its way out of tune.
Out of tune and about an octave too high atleast. Could that be sampled?
Ive never heard a real snare sound that bad. Youd probably break the lugs
tuning it that high

That band does kick complete ass though. too bad the drum sound ruins it

Jezz you guys are harsh! LOL

I agree with Mike Caffery./.. Playing along toa sample, not triggering. That's a mic clip guys.

ANyway that snare sound is easy for a drummer to get with a hi-pitched piccolo as mentioned. Helmet, anyone?

...and the old James Brown stuff --- very similar.

... And Electric Outlet by John Scofield/Steve Jordan --- very similar tone/approach, and playing along to samples/drum machine. And that was back in 1983

... and just about any modern R n B live drummer

So is that Mike landau on gtr?
