Talking Jimmy Eat World, Avril Lavigne Sound

hi gearslutz;)

i'm an young austrian producer and i'm really interested how the "big" producers
cope with mics and gear.
i'm very interested in the way that "bleed american" (jimmy eat world)
and avril lavigne's "let go" were produced. especially the chosen mics (and
positioning) of vocals, drums and guitars and maybe the rooms (behavior/material) they used...
of course i would be glad for any further information... (reverbs, plug-ins, tape or pro tools,...)

thanks
Julian

ps: how long does it take to produce such cd's?

1. Those 2 records/artists couldnt be more different. One is Top40 Pop, the other Alternative Rock.

similar vocal sound maybe? i haven't listened to either record in a very long time, but i recall a friend using them both as references for the vocal on a project he was doing. i remember him saying the 1176 was a big part of "that sound". this all could be coming out of my ass though, so be gentle...

Often, the BIG producers will also have an engineer that copes with gear.

I see the point of the person starting this thread.
It is certainly not a STUPID question!

Maybe we could rather try to help the man..

keep in mind the question is regarding the sonic qualities of the records, not the genres or target audience. i dont own either record (though I'm told I should own the JEW cd), but don't be so quick about mocking the question being asked.

Im not ashamed. i am a serious sound engineer/producer and i think avril rocks. listen to the albums. there is a stark contrast between the singles and the rest of her albums.pop at its darndest if you ask me.

what? listen to Futures the record, its the exact sam vocal treatment as Avrils stuff.
TONS of compression. I also use both avril and JEW as reference for sweet vocal sound

Jimmy Eat World

I don't know much about how "Bleed American" or "Futures" was recorded specifically but for what its worth I do know at least one of them was tracked at Ocean Studios (OCEAN STUDIOS BURBANK) in Burbank. I've been there and done some tracking with my friend who as an assistant for awhile and they do have some nice stuff. Also I believe if you go to their myspace page (MySpace) there are some pics of the gear they use.

Also if you are so interested

Check out the band Yellow Card, love or hate the music they tracked in the same studio and they have a whole bunch of videos of what they are doing, kind of answers your question about how long it takes to do an album like that.

That place is intense. 4 ELAM 250s and 2 ELAM 251s, 2 U47s... I mean it's no Blackbird, but still a nice collection of stuff.
