BAE "Lunchbox"

Does anyone know if the BAE Lunchbox conforms to the 500 form factor? I like the build quality of the BAE box and the separate PS. . I'd like to put a couple of the BAE 312's in with two API 512c's and maybe??...A1's, Purples....etc........thanks in advance

I have one here loaded with BAE, Purple & Buzz preamps and no issues of any kind. I'm not sure BAE is part of the vpr alliance though.

There is no better 500 series lunchbox than the BAE. It is wired point to point. No pcb boards with xlr mounted thru vias. Hated my API, love my BAE. All modules fit.

Loving my BAE rackmount lunchbox..

Just wondering what people are doing in terms of power switching. I was expecting an on-off button on the power supply. Up to this point I've been just plugging and unplugging the thing. I suppose I could attach it to a power strip

BAE is great. API is great. You'll be fine with either. (I'm a hand-wired snob, too, when it comes to guitar amps, but not having it in my API rack isn't a reasonable concern.)

My only advice is to get one of the larger racks (BAE or API). You're going to fill a lunchbox faster than you think and want more space. Plus, there are zillions of 500-form modules and new ones coming out all the time.

I've two 512c and two BAE 312A in my API rack, by the way. They're both incredible.

Best of luck.

Hi, my name is John [crowd says: Hi John] I started out with a 6 space BAE rack and then . . . . before I had hardly used it . . . . I sold it and bought the 11 space BAE rack! [crowd says: EXCELLENT!]

I have API, BAE, OSA, Shadow Hills and lots of A-Designs modules in my rack and they all fit and perform nicely!

I brought up the hand wiring to stress the build quality.

The issue isn't hand wiring, it's hand wringing, as in: "Oh my God" he gasped, wringing his hands, "I've only got one slot left, and I don't know which fabulous 500 series module to fill it with."

I love the API 6 slot lunchbox for portability, built in power supply, pickup in one hand and off you go. I would love the BAE as it has more power to run some of the high power usage modules like the Buzz and Shadow Hills. But for location work the API is just perfect.

raal, assuming you've also been using those pre's for awhile, can you describe the differences between the 312's and the Gama's?

Gamas have three positions: nickel, discrete and steel. nickel i think is supposed to emulate the custom desk at sunset sound. steel is supposed to be API-like and discrete is supposed to be very uncolored. the closest the Gamas get to 312s is on the steel setting but iMO they are not a substitute. my favorite settings on Gama are nickel and discrete. for the API thing i usually go for the 312s. the Gamas on steel sound a little bigger, some more low end IMO, than the API. one may prefer that or not. i usually use the 312s on drums.

i love SH stuff and i love my 312s.

Thanks for the comparison. So what does the custom desk at Sunset Sound sound like? I'm a little ways off from getting more pre's but the next thing I get I'm gonna shoot for some color..

Sorry to go off topic, but do you guys have original API 312's racked by BAE, or newer BAE 312A's with the Avedis op-amp?

I have a BAE 11 space and love it. 2 BAE 312s with the Avedis opamp and they sound great. Very big and a nice compliment to the 2 512c sitting next to them. Close but not the same. But I've fallen in love with the 2 A-Design P-1s next to that (my new favorite). I just got a mono Gama so haven't had enough time to find it's best use with the other toys.

BTW I emailed Shadow Hills about warranty info and Peter called back instead of emailing. Class act and a very nice man.

I already have an API 6 slot and I am considering getting the 10 slot. Now I have to decide whether I want the API or the BAE.

I hate to see it suggested that point-to-point wiring is inherently superior to circuitboards. That's probably not what you're getting at, but it's a pet crusade of mine. If the BAE is built better than the API, it's because it's built better, not because it's point to point. I know if I were to design and build two lunchboxes to the best of my abilities, the one that used a circuitboard would be vastly more reliable, less expensive, and just plain better than the one I did point to point. Still, I can think of (because I've seen) plenty of ways to **** it up using either construction. Take this Valley People rack I've got on the bench (please).
