Brauner Vs Neumann

Hi guys !

Due to my new studio I need to upgrade some microphones, for the vocal recording I was thinking about the classic NEUMANN U87 (I know this very well) or the BRAUNER PHANTOM V (I read great things about this microphone but no idea about how it sounds).

Is there anybody able to do a comparison between these microphones ?

I need a good sound for R&B and POP vocals with the "in your face sound".

The preamp used will be an AVALON 737

Thanks !

87 is a fine mic. I don't like it that much, but It'll work... I only have experience with the Brauner VMA, but I can say that is a TOP-NOTCH mic...

Sorry not that much help... IMO the U87 is a bit overpriced for what it is.

can't do a comparison for you, but i do own the brauner phantom c. from what i've read about the brauner, its got a wider dynamic range than the 87, namely a more open top end. and....for almost half the money! imo neumann's longevity and reputation for good mics keeps their prices higher than they should be. is that an oxymoron?

look around in mix magazines archive review section online. it seems as though not many mics can touch the brauner.

If you are going to be doing some R&B you might want to check out the Blue Kiwi. I have the bottle and I am IN FREAKING LOVE with that mic. I know Blue makes great mics. Check them out.

I have a matched pair of Brauner Phantom AE's and they're not that good on vocal duties. A Rode NTK would work better on most vocal sources. The Brauners are the best drum OH mics I've ever heard though. They do something really nice to high end. It's almost compressed sounding or something. I can't explain it but no other mic sounds better for this application. And they are really nice utility mics for every other instrument.

Dont you love when you ask a question about two mic's, and people respond with trying to talk you into buying something else.

In regards to your question, Brauner has a CD that shows examples of their mic's against the U87ai. Get a copy of the Cd and make your decision. I choose the Brauner over the U87ai.

I recently bought a Brauner VMX, and it is a perfect pop/R&B vocal mic. I much prefer it to my Neumanns. Haven't heard the Phantom V, but I'd imagine you'll be pretty happy with a Brauner.

Well, this thread is really outdated (5 years), but since it has been recently brought back to life then please let me address it for future reference.

Brauner's Phantom is a natural/transparent mic while Phanthera shows colored/charming quality. For modern pop/rock/r&b applications Brauner Phanthera seems to be the way to go...

Both mics come in cardioid or 3-pattern versions. A basic "L" versions are also available - they come with no accessories, but the mics are identical to "full" versions at a lower price.

Isn't the Panthera darker than the Phantom?

Brauners are not dark....at all. The only difference with the Panthera and Phantom is the Pantherea lower freq's were tweaked to stand out more giving a slightly richer sound while the Brauner has a more even freq response. Both are great.

Phanthera over U87 here all day! I love this mic. It's on every album I've done since I got it in 2010.

We got a pair of phantom c here as well as a pair of U87ai. On vocals the Brauner sounds "right" out of the box without any eq whereas the U87ai "needs" eq almost every time. The Brauners sound excellent and modern whereas the 87 gives you a more colored sound reminiscent of the past. Both can give excellent results, both need a little tweaking if their character is not the direction you aimed for. Usually the U87 needs air and sparkle whereas the Brauner sometimes needs more midrange weight ("" if that makes sense to somebody).
