demeter tube pres

Hello Slutz,

since I don't like the UA Solo 610 too much (got one for testing) I am still looking for an affordable but high quality and clear sounding tube pre. I have a really nice demeter tube DI (vtdb-2) and wounder how good their pres are (VTMP-2C and HXM-1):

- what are the sonic differences between the two models ?
- how do they compare to other good tube stuff like UA 610, MP-2a, Pendulum MDP-1, ADL 600?

Any experiences?

I have both the pre and the stereo direct. I think the stereo direct has more personality than the pre. They both can be super clean. The only thing that I don't like about the pre is that its almost too neutral. I plan on switching the tubes out to give it more of a personality. I record dance music though. So you should probably take my opinion with a grain of salt. tutt

I had a VERY early Demeter mic pre (circa 1990) and I used it for all of my ODs.
It was probebly a VTMP-2C, but I last owned it in 1992, so... I fergit!
I didn't use it on drums, but it improved the sound of every track I used it on.
It was a pretty big leap from the Soundtracs CM4400 to the Demeter!
I can listen back to tapes from that era and the tracks sounds VERY good!

..

only used the original tube compressor - the VTCL2.

VERY nice.

James D. was great - super nice guy and modded the front end for us
to make the input gain a bit higher (for a jazz flugelhorn / cornet recording).

quick, pleasant and responsive service from Demeter.

that compressor was used for many horn and vocal tracks on the record
(Tones for the 21st Century by Graham Haynes, son of legendary Roy).

i was the engineer (tracking and mixing).

a bit OT, but i'm getting my vote in for James and company

Demeter tube pres are awesome. Though I change the tubes in them. Regarding overheads, they tame a Neumann KM184 and that says something. I had a drummer play superfast and accurate cymbals and the demeter tube pre (VTMP-2B, I believe) picked up all the detail while adding enough warmth so the KM184s were not harsh on the cymbals. Toms and everything else came out great. Of course, it helped that it was a a great drummer with a great kit!
