Thread Starter | Vocal mic for rock / metal
Hi there, I'm going to buy a vocal mic TODAY... I've been reading plenty of reviews and forums and I've wittled it down to two choices: Audio Technica 4050 Shure SM7 They're both within my budget. Which one should I get? I want a mic that will allow me to record rock / metal vocals, but can be used for other applications too (possibly hi-hat, acoustic guitars, bass amp, drum overheads etc...). There's so much info out there I'm a bit lost. I need to be told which one I should try out first

Depends on your pre: SM7 needs lots and lots of gain. If you got one that is able to deliver go for the SM7. That doesn‘t mean the 4050 is a bad mic. You will get it later. Especially for OH. Clarence Yeah: first post. That was kinda fun ;-) |

At the moment I have no pre - just some pre's on my Soundtracs Midi PC desk... I'm going to get an expensive pre eventually... but I can't afford one now.

Check out the 4050 now. If it fits your voice, go for it. A very versatile and solid design—definitely a keeper. Start saving for a Pre and a SM7 but in the meantime take a SM 57/58 for a testdrive. It might do the ”rock-vocals“ trick. Clarence |

sm7 would be a safer choice with metal singers, mainly because of the price, and the spit. (coming from the singers) It doubles as a pretty cool FOK mic, and guitar cab mic also. |

Well, just got myself an SM7 - cheap too, so I'm happy. I'll see how it goes and if needed, I'll get a pre for it |

I've got it at last! Thought the guy on ebay ripped me off, but he just didn't send it till later on! Tried it with a metal singer, tried it with my own band's singer (we're hard rock / metal / rap metal) and myself... brilliant results for them all! Well impressed... My first propper studio grade mic too :D |
