Ry Cooder mastering with iTunes?

Not quite sure how I feel about this!
Apparently Ry Cooder liked the sound of what iTunes did to his recording so he has used it for his finished masters. Anyone know if this real?

now that is amazing.....
most people (myself included) turn that s**t OFF to make sure it isn't ruining playback.

i can see it being used as an effect, but to MASTER a CD project?

wow.

"...snipet from other forum by nails2109 ...breathtakingly ridiculous. It's like hooking up a little honda generator to a particle accelerator, or duct-taping bottle rockets to the outside of the space shuttle..."

I love that quote... hilarious.

It may be true, that they ran the tracks through i-tunes to impart some type of sonic enhancer. However they shouldn't call it mastering. As most of us know the process is much more complicated that that. Just read Bob Katz book on the subject.

There is an entire thread dedicated to this over on the mastering forum that includes the article about this. FYI, I tried it with some stuff and it sounded weird to me.

Well.........if you read the Times you would think that Jobs is JC and that Apple is "for the people". I personally believe this extends to early pro publishing software being available for the Mac. So, leave a little room for RC to be quoted incorrectly or out of context.

On the other hand, Ry Cooder, who apparently "has had trouble capturing the sound on CD (wav) can get a sound he likes using iTunes. Well.......Ry IS the same guy who in 1978 released Bop til You Drop with a big sticker that said something to the effect of "first major record release recorded to digital" (pre CD). Hyped around record stores (pre CD) and media (mag's, etc.) for being digital. A PRIME example of good to great music (the tune Hollywood) that had VERY noticeable thiness compared to everything else you could buy then on LP.

Seems to me that Ry is using marketing (hype) as best he can to overcome his (admirable) choice to play and promote REAL music. I hope he continues to have success with real people, playing together at the same time. Plenty of others doing other types of projects.
