ultimate "destination studio" list

Okay I'm trying to assemble the ultimate list of Destination Studios...

I'd like to book something next year as a little out of town working vacation.

I've looked at Allaire, and "sonic ranch' but would love to see what else is out there.

anywhere in the world, price not an object. lodging needs to be with the studio.

Great drum tracking room a must. Pro Tools as a final format to take away a must.

?

Hey Craig,

If you like the south of France and an EMI console, go to Vega:

Well, if I may put in a plug for our good selves at www.the-byre.com

Then there is Sawmills at the other end of the UK (though I do not have their URL to hand)

There are many more liusted at Don Larkins website at http://www.larkingslist.com/ - go to the studio list and see which ones meet your idea of a desination studio.

Grouse Lodge in the middle of Ireland has become a serious destination studio with Michael Jackson being one of the latest to record there. http://www.grouselodge.com/content.php?ID=1

If you chose it let me know and I'll make an introduction to the owner. It might help a little more than calling cold.

Its here www.sawmills.co.uk

I have worked there 4 or 5 times.

Its insane as a place to get to and you have to take a boat to get to the pub!

to get there you stand at the water front - and a boat picks you up!

Weather is good down there..

but the drum room is in a fairly low ceilinged room.. but its cool..

Food is always good - great staff - studio manageress Ruth is a diamond (Thai Green curry! yahooo!)

Capitol in Paris, Atlantis in Sweden and while ya ther Cosmos in Stockholm has an awesome live room with the SSL in it and apartments connected, is the Strong Room still happening in London? Be sure to drop acid first if it is. Syn in Japan, like a Kubrick film. Seeing Roger Waters' barge studio would be cool. In Oz there is a studio called Mixmasters that is worth a visit if anyone's ever here just to see the vintage outboard collection. Guy who owns it is probably oz'z premiere gear conissuer.

whats more important?
The "Destination"
or the "studio"
??????

I'm always reminded of Caribou Ranch when I hear destination studio...

It had the greatest of distractions and although it had great gear the performances at Caribou seemed to be slightly "distracted"
Not that there is anything wrong with that....

Capri is amazing. Who wouldn't want to hang out on an island off the coast of Italy for a while? Allaire of course should be on the list. Longview is great for tracking and hospitality, but not really a mixing space. They have both a classic Neve, and more exciting still, a Trident A-Range. Compass Point in the Bahamas would make a nice vacation, and of course, there's Terry down there. There's that fairly new place in Kentucky, St. Claire, but I don't know much about it past the beautiful pictures, 9000J, and Pilchner-Schoustal design. And take look at our own Studio Metronome in NH. It's on a private 100 acre hilltop, minutes from many activities, both winter and summer, and within easy reach of a couple airports and a couple larger cities if you need a night on the town. There are two choices of accommodations on-site, and if you take the residence, you also get 28 tie lines from the control room up into the two story great room where you can record things that require a large, live space.

Good stuff.

we'll want to be near some recreation--the trip will be with family for part of the time, with ten days being principal tracking, and another week for just hanging out exploring.

Nearby mtn biking would be awesome! Not really interested in " beachy" as we have that here.... Grouse lodge is looking wonderful, and i've contacted them and i'm looking up the area---

I think UK'ish or europe, as there are a few folks I'd like to drag over for some tracks.

This started after talking with Jmraz about his experience at Allair ( and the beautiful pics) he built a mini Allair on his property in Bonsail Ca. gorgeous room.

'vega' looks very vibey... did you work there Scott?

my wife would love that area!

If you have family and stuff I would strongly suggest Grouse Lodge. A holiday on the Miami coastline it may not be but there's a lot to do down there and the atmosphere is, well, pretty damn healthy. I used to work for the owner on another venture. He's a great guy and lives close with his family and kids. Dublin and Galway are also close enough to be visited easily. If you make it I'm sure there's enough of us Irish slutz on here to give you tips on where to go for the best Guinness. Although if you think the debate on preamps can get a bit hot so can pub recommendations by locals!

Im there as much as I can be! Granted I mostly do hiphop and miss out on some of the incredible recording spaces the studio has to offer, but everything about Longview is without a doubt worldclass! (myself included )

Yeah, a couple of times. The live room sounds enormous, there's a lower-ceiling-more dead area, and two booths. The EMI is probably the best sounding console I've ever used. The place has a nice "down-home" vibe, not pretentious at all. There are 6-8 bedrooms, great food, and lot's to explore in the area. I never seem to be able to escape the studio to explore anywhere I go, unless I stay on after the project...

One thing, the console is not huge by any means, so tracking and monitoring can get tricky. I monitored with stems from ProTools. I kind of prefer this anyway, as it keeps the focus on the performance, not on the mix, and song change-overs are instant.

Destination studios

My vote is for Circle House Studios in Miami. 3 SSl rooms in a mansion with pool.
Also there are some links I have been putting together over the years for cool studios. Check out the studio section on my links page here:
http://www.frequencyroom.com/links
Enjoy!
