Ok, So I have just purchased a set of EAB KM-EV pres. They sound beautiful, but I'm looking for some background on the company, and where they came from (consoles, modular parts). I know that these ones in particular did come from a console. I'm also curious about any down sides to these, and some quirks that they may have.

Hi, as far as I know those preamps were built to German Radio specs in Munich by Elektro-Apparatebau H. Geiling, a firm that closed shop in the early eighties. It looks like they mainly built portable consoles and OB-equipment. From what I've seen so far, it's all sturdy "military grade" stuff. The guys at Funkenwerk in Gaylord, KS could probably tell you more since they modded some EAB gear recently. Here is a link to a German site specializing in old broadcast modules. Funkstunde.com: Technische Dokumentation their old tube mixers look like tanks: http://schmitronicshop.de/images/DSCI0855.JPG I just bought 4 EAB MV-515 channel strips myself and hope to god they are as good as the seller will have me believe. Btw are your pres equipped with output transformers? Am still researching more data on EAB, will post relevant info. |

i don“t no the specific modell u own - the EAB geiling MV 63 is defenitly the rarest pre of german broadcast style production ( & the biggest ! ). i have never seen one above ser. nr. 160 i guess around 100 are still in use worlwide - so far , so good. definitly also true : it is the best historic preamp ever built. it operetes in pentode mode ( different than nearly all others ) and has much more balls, much less construction problems compared to a V76 . only these 2 can handle also line signals with theit pads. i have a few around me, and everyone that compared it directly to a V72 or 76 was more than impressed - the comments are usually through the roof... there are rumours in germany that a small team around andreas grosser and some guys are planning a redesign under the name of funkturm ( berlin ) that should be shown first at aes san francisco this year. if this is true and it is only 90% of an original good shape MV 63 , the world will be a better planet. the MV 63 historicwise is unbeatable - trust your ears. with a good neumann in front there is nothing comparable for lead vocals.howdy |

I am a fortunate owner of a pair. Happy to join the club. Andreas Grosser recommended them to me. He says they were the latest V76 type preamp made in West Germany. One of the best. And far superior to the standard V76. Which is limited in its filters. 40hz to 15hz some only had up to 12hz. MV63s are 20hz to 20KHz. Very rare as well is what I was told...
