Is kick/snare multing overkill if doing whole kit parallel compression also?

The title says it all. I haven't really done a lot of multing, although I would think that it would be an easy way to compress and gate the donkey balls out of your kick and snare whilst still preserving the tone of the original source. I guess it's similar in ways, but in parallel comping, you're obviously treating the kit as a whole and gating would be rather pointless. Thoughts? Anyone here radical enough to do individual comps on kick/snare/toms, drum buss compression, parallel compression, and mults? Talk about overkill.

No...It's never overkill. Mult away. And then mult again for good measure!

I have to agree - never overkill. I'll mult a kick twice usually. On one, compress the snot out of it and leave nothing but the attack. On the other, just try to get as much bass as I can - usually boosting the low's with a pultec and then compressing that. Then blend them back with the original sound to taste. Great way to beef up a kick and keep the integrity of the original sound.

Cool, I was just worried about making all these copies, but I guess it's not an issue.

if it sounds good go with it. I often mult kick and snare to really dial it in with the rest of the drum sub.

no man... it's actually all part of the game!

I think as multing is for getting the sound I am looking for without over processing the one track and parralele compression is for the punch in the chest.

Thanks, but I'll pass. I have an amazing vintage Gretsch kit with the best drummers in town... I do not need, nor want, samples.

I know that Gretsch kit, and it is, in fact, a great souding drum kit.

Hey Ben, you checking up on all the stupid questions I'm asking around here? See, if you'd just let me be your intern then I wouldn't have to ask all these questions. I'm still waiting to hear back from ya on that stereo track mixing question. I know you're a busy man though. Be well.

Not to get off topic here...but does anyone make samples that don't sound like the latest modern rock chart topper? I mean no disrepect to Bang and his producdt, but I'm talking about kicks that go "boom" and don't sound like a wet fish slapping me in the face.
